Maybe somewhere like Madrid? I say this because it has great nightlife so I assume it must be very fun.

From experience, Amsterdam is VERY overrated, spent two new years eve, freezing cold temperature and most nightclubs that night they're either closed or won't let you in if you don't have a VIP invitation. so you just go back to the hotel because of the freezing cold.

I can definitely reccomend Amsterdam, as a great place to visit for new years eve, Crazy fireworks everywhere in the city..that last all night long.Great atmosphere. But book early , because the hotels get booked very quickly.

Thanks for the suggestions

I originally wanted to go to Zermatt or Verbier for the NYE cos the person I'm going with loves to ski....but finding a hotel or apartment for 3 or 4 nights is near impossible.

I just got back from Amsterdam and fancy somewhere new. Although I'm sure there will be a good NYE vibe

Madrid or Barcelona could be a good choice too. But I'm not sure which 1

I recommend Madrid! Good nightlife and multiple options (the prices will be higher than a normal weekend, but still not like Swiss prices). At 12 o´clock be ready to eat the 12 grapes outside with thousands of people and then PARTY! Can be a little bit cold, but standable :) Have fun!!

I've celebrated New Year in Paris, Barcelona, Moscow, Amsterdam and this year we're going to London.

What's very important is that you know what to expect. In Amsterdam for example people typically start celebrating at home and go onto the streets around 10-11pm. Many restaurants are closed. In contrast, in Paris and Barcelona people celebrate in restaurants from 8pm to 12pm, after which they may go onto the streets. In this case you need to book a decent restaurant well ahead of time.

Berlin is fantastic, there is a large concert down at the Brandenburg gate, everyone is out on the street with fireworks , the city has loads of good value accommodation and food.

go east and go cold.

any one can go to a club at any time, you want to go to the cities main square to party and after mid night hit a club.  my opinion!  I think its a bit more special to party, see the fire works etc etc than simply be in a club for the count down.

i have done many european cities and all offer something different, i would say you couldnt go far wrong with Berlin.  that said all the german cities are fun, munich too.

Not wishing to put a negative vibe into such a postive thread, BUT

If you decide to go to Paris avoid Les Champs Elysees at midnight.

It is Paris' equvilant of New york's Times Square & London's Trafalgar Square:

What happens along with all the revellers is a large % of people looking for trouble come from the "disenfranchised" suburbs, looking for a fight with the large police presence.

So much stores board up their windows in anticpation for the violence.

I agree also that alot of people go to returants in the evening a celbrate to %& through midnight, alot of people hop from private party to private party.

Best New Year's eves parties I have had have been at sking resorts so I think your orginal idea was best, but yes minimum stays are costly & a pain the arse

Thats my tuppence's worth.

Have fun tho' wherever you decide to go

From my experience Madrid has a much diverse nightlife.... although the weather in Barcelona during winter is softer than in Madrid.... I found that Madrid was a lot more alive and less full of tourist traps and cliches.

Another overrated NYE was NYC (I didn't find the appeal in spending NYE on times square to see a crystal ball that's supposed to be an apple slide down a rod on top of a building) and then you go home to sleep because nightclubs in NYC close at 2am.

Another good choice is Berlin.... very fun city!

yes I think I would go with Madrid, or Barcelona for even warmer weather. Haven't done either at NYE but have been to both at least half a dozen times and both are fun. Barca probably more than Madrid.

Dude, has to be...Edinburgh! I mena really....

We Scots even have our own word for new year - HOGMANAY!

Scotland is home to the best Hogmanay party evah! http://www.edinburghshogmanay.org/

We went last year (along with 80,000) other people, for the open air party - which runs the length of Princes Street and the Princes Street Gardens.

T'was spectacular, free music, cheap drinks and warm to boot! All for the princely sum of TWELVE BRITISH POUNDS. I tell ye!

And wait for it, the fireworks! THE FIREWORKS at the stroke of MIDNIGHT! Tis like they never end!

Plus you get to meet lots of Scots in kilts and many international folks who have decided to join us in the revelry!

Yay. I feel giddy!

P.S. Going again this year, most def. Going to the ceilidh in the Gardens - sure thang! Wew, so many exclamation marks, so little time.

I heard Edinburgh has one of the best NYE in Europe... never been there in NYE, but a friend of mine was and told me great things about it...

I'm from Spain and I can tell you, forget about Madrid or Barcelona, they are not that great
