Best areas to rent if working at the WHO.

Hi all

I'm an Australian heading to Geneva for couple of months to intern at the WHO and am currently looking for accommodation.  I've been told Geneva isn't too big so I shouldn't worry about living right near the WHO, however, I won't have a car, I'll be relying heavily on public transport (and walking, if not too late at night).

Would really appreciate if anyone can suggest which areas I should be looking at - would definitely want to live close to shops/cafes/restaurants.. not a party animal so don't need clubs and cars, but don't want to be in a super quiet area either.  Also, if anyone has any leads of rooms/studio apartments available from 25th August to end of October, let me know :)   My budget is only up to 1000CHF.. why is everything so expensive over there!!

many thanks :)

Why is everything so expensive?

Well it is because generally employees in Switzerland are extremely well-paid, taxes compared to other places in Europe are lower, and this tends to bump up the price of everything, especially accommodation.

Welcome to glocals and soon to Geneva!

For accommodation, please use our Classifieds facility where, under “Housing”, you can find offers of accommodation and also place an advertisement of your own.

As to location, Geneva is a very compact city and you can easily walk to WHO from many districts on both sides of the lake.  In any case, the UN area is very well served by public transport.

Your budget is a fair one for a nice room so you shouldn’t have much difficulty in finding somewhere pleasant and convenient to stay.

As to why Geneva is expensive is a long story, but one important factor is that CH is a small, fiercely independent land-locked country whose overall quality of life is much in demand.

All the best, R.
