Best beer in Switzerland
What are the best beers of Switzerland?

I am from Toronto, which enjoys a healthy share of microbreweries, so I'd like to get to know some of Switzerland's hidden gems.

I enjoy lagers and ales, and I have an open mind to new tastes (One of my favorite beers in Toronto was Coffee Porter, a dark beer made with coffee grinds).

Any suggestions?

well...not sure about hidden jems....but Le brasseur (has their own brewed beer), which is a chain has a wide range of beers in Lausanne & Geneva. Calvinus beer is not bad either...can be found in any CO OP!Guinness you can get it at Pick Wicks Pub, Geneva for sure!Bern has a great beer place in tourist centre near the "bears haunt". Cheers, Sreyashi

I'm not sure about the Swiss beers. I haven't done a large-scale tasting, though.

When I can, I buy a Weissbier from Germany.

Switzerland is not a beer-nation.

Cheese, Chocolate: yes. Beer: no

;-)

ueli and unser are really good swiss beers but after a couple of those you know about, the next day is a struggle.  if your in basel go to fisher stube you can buy it in 3 or 5 litre towers or at least you could.

apart from that the only desent widely available swiss beer is calanda. Feldschossen and wartek are enough to put you off drinking!

Actually, this might just be the place... one of you must know. Which beer maximises the ratio of volume-normalised alcohol content to volume-normalised price?

[ Actually, maybe I should post that in Aquarius' (r.i.p.) "Not just surviving..." thread. ]

There's more and more micr-breweries opening up in Switzerland, a pretty good list is on this link

http://www.bov.ch/cgi-bin/guide.cgi

My 2 favourites in the Zurich area are the Rappi Bier Factory and Spiffing Ales. The Rappi Bier Factory is run by a Kiwi, his Rappi Gold is amazing, but for dark beers his Black Bier won 2nd prize in a pan-european beer festival in Munich a year or so back.

Spiffing Ales is run by a Brit and makes CAMRA standard British Real Ale.

I can't believe nobody posted the obvious answer. Two months ago the New York Times ran a story by wine critic Eric Asimov posting the results of a high-level tasting of barrel-aged beers from around the world. Guess what? The world's best (BA) beer is brewed right here in Switzerland. Switzerland’s Abbaye de Saint Bon-Chien from the Jura. It's listed as prohibitively expensive, but I bought a few bottles at the big beer place in St. Legiér and they weren't ridiculous. What did I think of the beer? Not telling. I'd love to hear your opinion without any pre-conceived ideas (except those of course from the NYTIMES). The brewery can be visited by small groups. Hey, this might be a very cool member activity for a few real beer connoisseurs?

Any interest out there?

Cheers,

Tony

PS By the way, for reference, my personal favorites are Westmalle Trappist Dubel, and New Zealand's DB Green.

I vote for Rappi's beer. He has more than the above mentioned Black and Gold. Coming from Portland, Oregon I was looking for a nice hoppy IPA and he's just getting ready to brew one for the Spring.

There's an event coming up the end of April with several craft brewers that might interest you.

I just found a new store in 'Geneva' that has over 555 beers (including 125 beers of Switzerland)

and about 100 spirits. With a pretty good selection of Whisky's or Whiskey's.

I was amazed in the beer selection, with over 8 Canadian, 70 Belgian, 40 american , 60 English, 10 greek, and hundreds more, etc.

I dont work there or any commercial interest, but just the love of beer and this was an excellent discovery.

I found the website that also includes list of the stocks.

'Drinks of the World', Gare de Cornavin (in train station next to starbucks & Gidor Coiffure) www.beerworld.ch

I talked to the Manager who ordered a special bottle of Irish Whiskey, got it in a few days and got a 10% discount.

and when I compared prices, they are pretty competetive :)
