I was actually stopped on the Route de Suisse at Coppet by the Police two years ago to check if I had one! Mandatory, I'm afraid.

The insurance cover is for Civil liability only (RC, responsabilite civile)
For the insurance to have any sens, you'd better fill in, on the copy you keep at home, the model and color of your bike with frame number.

The vignette is something which has been around for maybe 50 years. It was introduced rather to relocate stolen bikes than to be an insurance. I t was a metal plate earlier and looked like a small car plate. It has changed in the past years and they added some more insurances, but basically I think there is nothing which you don't already insured somewhere else....
The only thing is, you need to have it, because it is a must from the legal point of view.

PS Did you go to Zermatt?
