Bike thieves in GVA!
Guys,

If you ride a bike around GVA, make sure you lock it real well. I bought 2 pairs of bikes in the past month, and both were stolen, despite being locked. And it wasn't real desirable bikes reither, just some Migros-Budget ones.

So lock your bikes real well, with a strong expensive lock!

I recommend you report Tinkie to the appropriate authorities and suspend her Glocals account. That's pretty low, Tinkie.

Thanks Hayes.

I must admit that when I first saw Tinkine riding a Migros-Budget bike, just around the time my own bike of the same brand was stolen, I thought nothing of it. But now I do 1+1, and you're absolutly right!

Tinkie: that is low of you indeed!

Those bikes are stolen so the thief can actually use them.

Because there are so many of them, the chances that the police tracks it down are nil.

Expensive bikes are stolen for the parts.

I would try getting a used bike that was expensive three years ago and never clean it.

The only risk with this approach is that the bike you buy 2nd hand has been abused a lot by its previous owner and you essentially buy a dud.

Also, expensive bike are more expensive to maintain, because their parts are more expensive.

But at your current M-Budget bike churn-rate, I'd think twice about getting a lot more of those.

Do the math...

;-)

Melanie: welcome to our (fast growing) club of ex bike owners!

Maria: no use buying a bike indeed as long as Tinkie is on the prowl.

You are right. Why buying a bike when you can steal one? :P

(I'm in the club as well. :( My bike lasted a month or so).

By the way... a good advice:

mark down the 'numero de chassis'. It's the number impressed on the metal under the pedal block.

You can use it when denouncing the theft and maybe keep a slight hope that your bike is found.

(I just said 'hope'!)

So help us out people. When and where was your bike stolen? At work, when it was locked on the street, outside your building? I know two places i will leave my bike (if i manage to get one!) and i think both are safe (at work and in the basement of my building). But if someone got their bike stolen there then that changes things (might have to get a car instead). I dont mind buses but early morning shifts are hard in the winter.

maybe the appropriate punishment would be to chain tinkie to a lamp-post until someone comes a long with some bolt cutters and sets her free. it would be an interesting experiment to see how much the police care. we could take bets on how long she remains there: ten chuffs in; person with the nearest time takes all the cash. i'll post in member activities now and report back.

why not get glocals behind to propose to the city of geneva to bring one of those rent-a-bikes that's now big in Barcelona, Paris and other major cities across europe. You know, the kind that's so ugly no one would want it for their own?

Exactly. Big in major cities. Geneva? Good luck with that.

How does it help, then? Since they're so ugly, wouldn't tinkie and her mafia just continue to steal normal, nicer bikes from good, honest, hard-working, tax-paying citizens?

til then, I'll continue to live vicariously through the photos and stories of thefts til i find my way back there again soon :P
