Billag warning for newcomers

Hi,

I moved to Geneva 10 months ago and I never reacted to the Billag letters that arrived. It seems that I should have because they continued sending invoices with additional delay penalties. I sent cancellation email on May and they were kind enough to react on that now on start of September. Result was that I have to still pay the months before I sent the cancellation email and also the delay penalties (5CHF each). Other option would be to try to complain by sending a letter and waiting againg months and paying more penalty fees.

In summary, when you move to Switzerland you have to be active and sent email to [email protected] immediattely when you start getting the lettes from them. Otherwise you end up paying or to a long uncertaing fight. You cannot do the cancelling by phone - they will only tell you to send an email with cancellation request and client number.

Good luck!

the new law is that all residents and businesses must pay Billag, regardless if you have TV, Radio or no computer. It is an obligation. So letters to cancel is not going to exclude you from having to pay the 'tax'.

sorry but if you fight this you will just be spending alot of time and still loose to pay late fees and penalties.

Dave: If that is true, it is very recent change. I received the cancellation letter just like two weeks ago. Also the billag web page lists still conditions when you need to pay:

Reka: Yes, if one has no tv, radio and laptop (with specs listed in the above link), you don't need to pay. The ridiculous laptop requirement can be for example met by using suitable Linux operating system.

In fact, all thing considered, you're exempted to pay the Billag only if you're an Amish.

Ok, there are some exceptions, like if your leaving switzerland for a long time.

Also if the prperty is vacant.

Also if you moved to another location, you dont pay at the old one, but you must declare when.

But if you have no device running or connected (antenna, internet, cable, wifi, GSM, Mobile phone) it does not exempt you, you still must pay. So an example is if you move into an appartment and have a radio, mobile phone, computer, laptop, TV, Car with radio, etc. You must pay the billag fees.

so if you say you have not connection but have internet, you must pay.

An exemption is for AVS pensioners.

be very careful, Billlag does not hesitate to fine persons CHF 5000- if an exemption claim is submitted and is false.

101 LRTV).

check out the above links for info.
