Bmw without x drive

Hi all!

Just arrived in gva and currently looking at buying a car.

love the BMW 3 serie convertible, but there is no model with xdrive (4 wheeler). We plan to often go sking during weekends and wonder if some of you got experience going in the mountains with a non-4-wheller BMW (with winter tires).

is it possible or way too risky?

thanks in advance for ur help.

It's gonna be just like any other RWD: terrible in winter.

Get a Subaru ( any of the awd will do, get a scooby for extra fun added) !!!!!!!!!  The only car worth having to go and venture in the mountains during winter out here, plus there are shed loads here in Switzerland because Subaru and the Swiss have a love affair going on since the dawn of time, euh I wonder why ? dont worry about a ski rack... with a bmw rear wheel drive, he wont need skis. theres no way he's getting up a mountain in that car.

Hi Max, it is absolutely possible to drive in snow, however you should remain on-road because in deeper snow you will get stuck easily (or have chains with you) and you should be a proficient driver (used to controlling drifts, even though the ESP will do most of that). Nevertheless 4WD is much safer and easier to drive, but also less fun :-).

@ Richard: you can load them in the trunk with a ski bag going to the interior

Happy driving!

In 3 Series dashboard you have the ESP with two settings 25% and 100% (totally off).If you are driving in snow but under a concrete base you need to set up to 25%.

Driving a XDRIVE is the best option but driving a standard 3 model with the setting in 25% means the power given to the wheels will be enough to keep going but not too much to lose the control. In the moment you get over the limits the system stops the wheels and reverse the movement, avoiding the drifting.

In addition you have to consider the increase of the price comparing with other cabriolets;  the residual value, service cost, consummation and his position in the market.

A cabriolet makes a big devaluation so the extras should be considered very carefully in order to keep a real value in the future.  Driving experience under snow  unforgettable!!

Thanks for your replies guys.

Helen and Toulbag, will let you know if I start looking at coupé/berlines, but for now sticking with the cab.

Carlos, not sure I got your post regarding the value. Not very used to car extras (service, devaluation, etc.), actually my gf won't change our car against anything but a cab and i found the 3 convertible the good match because some nice cab in the summer and looks like the coupé the rest or the year.

Basically, it looks like it's more or less managable, but that you want to have the chains with you in any circumstances basically.

Need to think about it, don't want to spend my time using it, but that's kind of the exact car that would fit us.

Having test drives on thursday...

@richardm: Didn't know that Max was trying to sell his convertible BMW ! serious?Anyhow,  right on top of your boot with easy to remove clamps on the boot four sides and suction cups for safer keeping. There is also another option with two additional roof bars made by VW especially for the Golf/Rabbit convertible with side inserts.  Sorry Max you ought to buy a new brand..Money mouth
