Boring car insurance question im afraid

Hi all, as the title states...

I have my car over from england after moving over in January (brought the car over 2 weeks ago). My UK insurance will cease imminently. Is there an insurance company over here where I can insure my car at least for the trtansitional period while I register the car in Switzerland.

(May take a while as im moving from the french side of the border to the swiss side, cant register it in France yet as I havent got my French permit yet. Choosing a place to live in Switzerland may take a while too!)

Checked with Gendamarie what they allow with UK plates and they said im ok for 3 months on UK plates. Just need the insurance for that period of time. Tried with the allianz insurers but they want it registered in Switzerland first, tried about 10-15 uk insurers but they dont want to know. Feels like im trapped in no mans land!

Time to call the Swiss insurance companies then...

Zurich, Winterthur etc... they've got people who speak English.

You can also get temp license plates from the Auto Bureau which contain insurance and let your drive the car for a few days. But it's a more expensive choice and not very well known.

Apart from that, I don't know. Hopefully someone else does.

Thanks for the response! I have sent Zurich an email explaining the situation so hopefully they can help. It will be more likely with a big company like zurich than a smaller company.

Hi

Did you find an insurance company who would insure a car with UK plates in Switzerland? I'm in the same situation, I can't find a Swiss insurance company who will insure a UK registered car, very annoying,

I had the same situation last year when I was thinking of bringing my Motorbike over. I was told by Zurich that they could only insure the bike once it had been approved and was suitably adorned with Swiss plates.

This is because before getting the Swiss plates the bike would need to be tested by the official testing dept and any modifications carried out before the Swiss plates could be approved.

Headlights and speedo need to changed at the very least, and possibly the catalytic converter.

If I were you, I would find out what modifications will be needed and how much it's likely to cost before doing anything else. The best way to do that would be to bring the car over for a couple of months and take it to the official testing site in Carouge to get the official verdict.

Hello,

I don't understand why your UK insurance will cease immediately: are you allowed to drive abroad with your UK plates and UK insurance ? ... if yes it should cover you (just don't tell them you are moving permanently until when you get a French or Swiss permit ;-) )

When you get the French or Swiss permit you can start the import process of the car, and when you have the "zoll number" from the customs then any Swiss insurance will accept your car, provided you are in the process of getting Swiss plates too.

At least it worked like that for me ...

Ciaociao
