Just to take your mind of the football try this one
A clock was correct at midnight.
From that moment it began to lose four minutes per hour.
The clock stopped two and a half hours ago showing 16.48.
The clock runs for less than 24 hours.
What is the correct time now?

Hmm . . .
Every 15 hours the clock looses 1 hour (15*4 min = 60 min), so when the real time is 15:00 the clock shows 2 pm (14:00).
So when the clock shows 16:48, it has lost another 12 minutes ==> 3 hours in real time ==> the real time = 18:00 (15:00 + 3).
18:00 was 2.5 hours ago so current time is 20:30?

To continue this thread with another puzzle - a bit of maths and a bit of logic but not too much of both in this old funny one !

Right now, Mum is 21 years older than her child. In 6 years, her child will be 5 times younger than her.
Where is Daddy?

jumping jacks=x
high kicks= y
therefore 10x+4y-39=10x+y
so, 3y = 39
y=13

OK, Imagine you are driving a big red bus in London. at the first stop, no one gets on and the bus is empty. at the 2nd stop, 3 people get on. at the 3rd stop 9 people get on. at the 4th stop 7 peeople get on but 4 get off. at the 5th stop 12 people get on and 3 get off. at the 6th stop 8 people get on and 2 get off.
Now answer: what is the bus driver's telephone number? ( Hint: everyone will give a different answer, and still be correct)

Another oldie
In your basement are three light switches, all of them currently in the OFF position. Each switch controls one of three different lamps on the floor above. You would like to find out which light switch corresponds to which lamp.
You may move turn on any of the switches any number of times, but you may only go upstairs to inspect the lamps just once.
How can you determine the switch for each lamp with just one trip upstairs?

Well assuming that the lamps have light bulbs with eco UNfriendly tungsten-ish? filaments which not only give light but also quite a bit of heat.
1) Turn on one of the lamps for say 10 minutes, enough for the light bulb to get warm. Turn off. This corresponds to light switch A.
2) Turn on any of the other two lamps, which corresponds to light switch B.
3) Go up and check
4) The "glowing" lamp corresponds to light switch B, the lamp with the warm light bulb corresponds to light switch A and the lamp that is not "ON" corresponds to light switch C.

100 Dwarves are gathered in a cave, and as good dwarves they all wear a hat, which is either red or blue - but they don't know its color and can't see it either. They can see the hat of their peers though, but they cannot communicate in any way (no talking, nor signs, no nothing). There's nothing in the room they could use a mirror and they cannot take the hat off.
Uppon leaving the cave, they have to sort themselves in two groups, red hats on one side and blue hats on the other. How can they achieve that?

i'm going to make up some assumptions here since you didn't specify... that 'assuming' there are equal number of red & blue hats, then if you count the other's, you can figure out if you're a red or blue by the uneven number of either.

YouMeCo, the number of red hats and blue hats is not important. It could be 50/50, or or 37/63 or whatever. There's no light in the cave so they cannot count the total number of red or blues and they leave it one by one, and, therefore, cannot make any assumption as to the total number of each kind.

Hi Free,
you can only answer this if the dwarves can somehow know the colour of the hats of the other dwarves.
You say there is no light in the cavern. But there will be light when they exit.
[If you neglect the non-trivial issue of the sudden light blinding the dwarves,]
each dwarf will be able to see the colour of the hats of all other dwarves, but not their own.
Thus they can sort themselves as follows:
The first dwarf starts a line.
The second dwarf lines up next to the first dwarf. It doesn't matter which side.
For all the following dwarves, they must do as follows:
If the dwarves who are already in line, have all hats with the same colour,
i.e. all red or all blue, he stands on one of the ends of the existing line on either side.
If he can see dwarves with red and blue hats in the line,
the dwarf squeezes in the position where the red coloured hats end and the blue coloured hats begin or vice versa.
If all dwarves follow this rule, then the dwarfs are always lined up as blue first, red next, or the other way round.
cheers
muon

i.e. all red or all blue, he stands on one of the ends of the existing line on either side.
If he can see dwarves with red and blue hats in the line,
the dwarf squeezes in the position where the red coloured hats end and the blue coloured hats begin or vice versa.
If all dwarves follow this rule, then the dwarfs are always lined up as blue first, red next, or the other way round.
cheers
