Brainteaser - What happened in the Car?

A man and a woman are driving along a country road on a cold winter night when the car breaks down. Before leaving to find help, the man tells the woman not to open the doors or windows and not to let anybody in. He leaves, and she does as he says. When he returns, she is dead and there is a stranger in the car. What happened?

A gallion is ignited on the high seas.
All sailors, except for the captain, leave aboard life boats.
The captain dives and swims under water for 90 metres. He hears an explosion.
When he surfaces, he immediately hears another explosion.
The captain rejoins a life boat and is pulled aboard by the sailors.
The captain mentions that he heard two explosions.
The sailors state that they only heard one explosion.
Both captain and sailors are telling the truth.
Question: How is this possible?

That due to the speed of sound in water is faster than that of air , So he heard the same explosion twice

sound travels at aprox 321m/s depending on conditions through air while sound has a speed of around 1500m/s in water.

In the basement there are 3 light switches in the off position. Each switch controls 1 of 3 light bulbs on the floor above. You may move any of the switches, but you may only go up stairs one time. How can you determine which switch controls each light?

switch on 2 of the switches and leave them for a little bit.... then turn one of them off and go up stairs.
the light that is on will be the one you turned on and left one.
touch the other 2 - the one that is hot is the one you turned on and then off
the one that is cold will be the un touched switch :-)

The reflexion of the sound wave on the sea floor can also explain such a phenomenon. But if the captain dives 90m under the surface, I bet his ear-drums will not be of any help anyway!

with the term geek. I am an engineer myself, working in IT (well more marketing these days) and I sign up for Geeks night.
So no offense was meant with the term geek :) i meant it in a good way ...
actually proud to have a geek corner in the forums with those kind of mathematical/geeky/logical riddle.
And no, i don't have a precise idea on how people should act and behave, i beleive in individuality, but hey, what do I know .. i love fashion, harry potter, mathematical games and Star wars :S :S :S
