Buying a TV + Portable movie harddrive - Stores - Suisse or French?

Dear all,

I need some advice on buying a tv and hope you guys can help:

- Is it cheaper to buy it in France?

- Would I have to pay additional taxes at the Swiss border?

- I'd like to know what (good)stores have a website so I can compare prices and if you have a good experience with warrantee/return policy at the store in case of DOA or etc.?

- Any advice on TV technology as I believe LCD-LED tv's seem to be the best choice also looking at color and use of electricity.

- I have seen a portable multimedia device/harddrive that you can hook up to your PC and can transfer movies such as DVD, DivX and Avi. After you can connect it to your TV and play movies. Does anyone know such device and what its called so I can look for it?

- not necessarly (TVA in Switzerland is lower than France)

- yes above 300Chf

- Mediamarkt, Fnac, Fust.

-LED is also LCD, it's just the backlight which is made of LED's instead of Neon Tube. To make your best choice visit: http://lcd-compare.com Personnaly I have a Philips with ambilight which is great. If you only watch movies, go for a projector instead.

- The best is to buy a DLNA capable NAS (various brands are available) and a DLNA capable TV, so you can watch movies and listen to music via your home network. Philips TV's are WIFI capable if you buy the USB Wifi plug, so no need to have Rj45 cables.

cheers,

http://www.lcd-compare.com/assistant-tv-lcd.htm

this assistant is very usefull, it's in french btw.

And last but not least, if you plan to buy others stuffs like DVD or Blue-Ray player, try to buy same brands, it usually easier to take in hands. ;-)

Hi Thomas,

- You should check www.toppreise.ch for price comparison and availability of the products you'd like to buy. Also check the MediaMarkt, Conforama and InterDiscount stores, they always have some very good offers.

- For your TV, go for a LED TV, less electricity consumption, thinner y lighter screens. And if you can, 3D gimmick for future proofing ;-) .

- I have one of those media player and I'm very happy with it. It's called Western Digital TV HD Live or WDTV HD Live for short. You can throw almost any computer media file (avi, mov, mkv, etc.) at it and will just play fine (up to 1080p). You can hook it up to a home theater set for 5.1 audio. You can also connect a LAN cable or some supported WiFi USB dongles for Internet and network connection (for YouTube, Pandora, etc. or streaming media directly from your computer). This device do not have an internal storage, just plug an external hard drive or pendrive with your files to the USB ports. Highly recommended.

Hope this will help you!

But since most of the good shareware sites have been shut down... Im back to playing dvd'd from my PS3 which is blueray as well.

If you go and have a look on the high street, once you know what items you are looking for, have a look at www.1000ordi.ch; its generally significantly cheaper than high street shops (will tend to fare well on the topreise.ch site) and has a pick-up location in carouge if you order on-line and select store collection.  It's mainly for pc hardware but they have quite a range of mainstream multimedia products (on the left menu under home multimedia).

Hey Chris,

Thanks for the offer, but Im planning to do it end of the month as from then I have all the time in the world to set it up. Also I haven't figured out which one to buy yet. Im considering the SHARP Aquos LC-46LE925E. Now after reading reviews they always find something negative so Im a bit in doubt.. For now it's top of my list, but the search for the best one continues. If you have come across a nice one let me know. Im looking for a 110 -117cm screen, with 3D, preferably LED. Although I hear good things about the Panasonic plasma screens.

Hi guys,

It's not a streamer, but if you like to watch movies on your TV we're featuring a Video on Demand offer from SwissTV on www.BuyClub.ch right now.

You pay CHF 99 and you get the SwissTV box + a CHF 75 credit for renting movies and other content.

You can see the offer here: www.buyclub.ch/geneva/swisstv

1000ordi is good, but just next door is prodimex.ch and they also have a wide range of flat screen TVs and with some really good prices.
