Buying a new TV

I would like to buy a new tv for my flat now, together with PS3 which I will use both for gaming and as a dvd/blue ray player.

I would like LCD and I am reasonably keen on Sony but other than that im quite confused. I read a lot of articles that many tvs have a delay lag for gaming consoles... also I think Id want 100hz but I am not sure how important it is and if I should go for LED backlighting.

In terms of size I will prob be watching movies from say 3m and will be sitting closer for the gaming. I figured I should get 40"/100cm on the diagonal.

Any thoughts?

Sony would be a good choice, other good choice would include Samsung or Panasonic.  LG would be another alternative.  I wouldn't be too concerned about delays when gaming, any reasonable TV will work fine.  I have a Samsung Series 5 that works fine with my PS3.  LED TV's are very cool but I think you pay a pretty high premium, probably not worth it in my opinion.

Good Luck.

100Hz has nothing to do with input lag, which is what, you refer to.

Decide, which is more important: Gaming or regular TV. There are many parameters affecting the choice, input lag is just one and it only affects gaming (but not in a small way).

A plasma has no input lag, but currently has, in my opinion, inferior postprocessing chips for regular TV or movies. An LCD (or LED-backlit LCD, if you prefer) has to add some processing, and you would have to look for one with a 'game mode' to minimize it. Plasmas are generally considered to have the best picture quality, however, but can have other drawbacks.

You could hardly get a 50Hz LCD nowadays, if you tried, but it is far from certain that above 100Hz would yield much visible benefit. 3D.. if you want to go there, there's even more to consider.

40" from 3 meter is fine. Any further away and highdefinition (bluray) will seem like regular definition (DVD).

Contrast ratios can largely be ignored, as the black-to-white contrast numbers are not very useful (because it is the undisclosed grey-to-grey contrast along with rise-fall time, that matters) and are often not even comparable across manufacturers. Then there's the local dimming vs. edgelit vs. plasma consideration - and design, price and other things, as well.

Good luck compromising ;)  or you could also avoid the "analysis cost"/hassle and just to to Conforama or Toppreise.ch and pick one.

Thanks for your replies.

Do you think LED backlight will be easier on eyes than what the standard LCDs use, since they basically have fluorescent lamps behind them?

I didn't mean to say that the number of Hz on the display and the lag are connected, I meant to say it as a separate comment.

Here are some of the TVs I was considering to buy:

http://www.amazon.fr/gp/product/B003CJSSC8/ref=ox_sc_act_title_3?ie=UTF8&m=A1X6FK5RDHNB96

http://www.amazon.fr/gp/product/B004K1ELJ6/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&m=A1X6FK5RDHNB96

http://www.amazon.fr/gp/product/B00336KJZE/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?ie=UTF8&m=A1X6FK5RDHNB96

What do you think?

Thanks

By the way I live in France and don't have a car so I thought buying it on Amazon is the ideal option - free delivery and the best customer service and security ive ever come across when shopping anywhere. But of course when it comes to TV they perhaps dont have that much choice. So these were the ones I narrowed it down to.

I bought mine at amazon.fr as well.  This is the one I bought I have been quite happy with it.  Your choices looked fine too, the LED ones seem much cheaper now then when I bought mine.

Hi Andrew, I bought a Samsung (UE55C8700), it's an excellent TV, but I don't play videogames. If you want to save money, you should definitely buy it in Switzerland as it is much cheaper than in France or other Euro countries. Sounds counter intuitive, but it really is. I bought it at soundgarden.ch and I can only recommend it. Enjoy shopping!

One of the ways, I evaluate, is to look for moving text, like credits or newstickers. This will tell you a lot about how easy the whole viewing experience will be. There are good and bad models, even within the same manufacturer's lineup, so you basically have to see the demo mode in the store or rely on tests and reviews.

In principle, LED-backlit or plasma would be better wrt. reducing eye fatigue.. but in practice, little difference, in my opinion.

There's also pixmania.fr.

Incidentally, some people won't buy from Sony [1, 2, 3], nor from Amazon [1], due to their business practices, so I won't advise either way on them.

They are indeed cheaper.

Unfortunatelly that place is very far away (close to Zurich) and they dont deliver outside Switzerland.

I have compared prices of Amazon.fr and Conforama.ch and they seem comparable.

Looks like Ferney's post has been removed?!

Well thanks for the tips.

I see no problem with Amazon's 1-click. With Amazon you are always free to cancel things, even after it has arrived to your house. I have emailed them should I buy a TV from them how many days would I have to return it. I think this will be the best way to see which one is best by trying it at home. And I doubt anyone would be more willing to let me do this than Amazon.

My problem is I dont have a car so even having it sent to a workplace... I still have the problem of getting it home... I dont exactly fancy carrying the TV with me on the bus.

Pixmania sounds like a reasonable alternative.

Pixmania.fr versus Toppreise.ch has given only 1-2pct differences for the things, I have bought, and was not worth the, albeit, small risk at the border and the extra hassle in shipping.

Pixmania ships to your door in France, but you can choose another pickup spot. I buy there all the time.

I see both of my posts: no.1 and no.5.

Offtopic> The issue with Amazon was and is their semi-succesful attempt to patent for themselves a basic feature of the web, namely a shopping basket, in their case, a 1-click basket, something which is obvious to anyone in the know, even when it was filed, notwithstanding the very idea of patenting concepts instead of implementations of concepts.

I leave the patent discussion at that, because there is enough material on that on the web.

I have found this TV on pixmania:

http://www.pixmania.com/fr/fr/4940024/art/philips/televiseur-led-40pfl7605h.html#pix-review

It says there that the delay is 2ms only. I guess this would be safe for gaming, but I wonder if this is really the delay for plugging in the console?

Thanks

2ms corresponds to 500Hz, whereas the TV supports 100Hz, so the number is not so useful, except for marketing purposes. I doubt a current console outputs more than 60 frames per second in Full HD anyway.

The 2ms refers only to the panel itself, and does not take any picture processing (input delay) into account, which adds to the number. However, it's very fine TV according to the test results, and I might buy it myself, where I looking for one. No word on the gaming, though.

Well laptops normally have LCD 60Hz and Ive never had a problem with those sorts of screens, but I wonder if you have a much bigger screen then you would need a higher number of Hz?

Yes, if it's very big. 60Hz is plenty, though. I run my projector on an 84" screen and 60Hz is smooth, although still very little material is shot in that framerate. For a 40" screen, 60Hz will be perfectly fine - and the PS3 is the limiting factor here, rather than the TV, in terms of framerate.

Well according to this...

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=558125

... if I connect a PS3 to and HDTV I dont need to worry about input lag.

Then I guess I can buy any TV.

So best would be 100Hz proper LED (not edge) 40" from a reputable company.

Well, the reason I was interested in 100Hz in the first place was because I thought it would be easier on the eyes, and LED because its cool, it eats less power and I think it will be easier on the eyes. Or am I wrong?

You are right, although the article is very old (2005).

Increased Hz over 50Hz won't do much in terms of relieving eye strain, though, because LCDs largely do not cause that. 100Hz and above is for improved motion quality, if the TV is fitted with suitable motion compensation chips (source of input lag).

I think, I'd just give the Philips a try myself. The reviews are excellent.

Thanks a lot for all your advice.

My problem with that one is that it is from some third party seller and even though he has very good rating its not the same as buying directly in a store.

If there was any problem it would be a lot more complicated.

Well a collegue from work suggested he can help me out with his car sometimes so maybe I will just hunt for some good offers in geneva...

Now let me ask one more thing, if I was placed in a position where I have to make a choice... either normal LCD with 100hz OR LED (edge or full) but less than 100hz, what in your opinion is a better idea?

You are unlikely to find any 50Hz LCDs, and especially not in the higher price range, that local dimmed ("full") LEDs are in, so the choice revolves more around price and design, once you decide you like the picture. Currently, the standard is 100Hz. If you can, do yourself a favor and see if moving text is smooth. You can't read it in specs.

So I got that TV. It has a nice contrast but it has motion blur. I have done some research and it seem that pretty much all LCD based TVs have this issue. Which I don't understand because it seems that computer monitors that are LCD don't have this at all.

I got it on Amazon and I have time till 28th to decide if I want to return it or not. I like the tv a lot and I love the philips ambilight but the motion blur is annoying me since I play a lot of ps3 games. I also feel that 40" was a bit too big for 3m distance. Maybe if I will change I will go for 32" and put it on a tv stand with wheels so I can move it closer for games and blue rays and further for normal DVDs as on 40" from 3m I can see the defects on any content that less than 720p.

Should I try to find a TV that doesnt have a motion blur or is it pointless and should I just buy a monitor which has an HDMI input? Although I cant seem to be able to find a monitor larger than 32".

But seriously why do LCD tvs have a motion blur? Ive never seen a motion blur on my laptop screen or any PC monitor.
