Buying a new laptop

Dear all,

I’m planning to buy a new laptop (PC), probably, in the next month. I have specific questions, on which I’d like to hear your comments and advices. I would be very thankful if you could reply in a structured manner.

1 – Must be silent, barely noticeable. Is there any laptop manufacturer that you would (not) recommend me (like Toshiba, Sony, Samsung, Dell, etc.)?

2 – Must include the latest wireless technologies, namely wi-fi “n” and preferably bluetooth. Is there any manufacturer that usually has problems with internet connectivity over wi-fi? I want to stay away from such laptops.

3 – Must be power efficient, which also means less noise and heat made. At least with 5-6 hours of battery life. I know that HP and ACER have power efficient laptops (up to 10 hours). Any other suggestions on this point?

4 – Must have a full HD monitor/display (1920x1080 pixels), with full HD compatible hardware. Any suggestions on which type of displays to choose?

5 – Must have a fast Intel microprocessor. Ideally Core i5 with the latest Sandy Bridge microarchitecture and Turbo Boost, released in Jan. 2011 (which is very energy efficient). I could find only 2-3 laptops with this microarchitecture here in Geneva. The rest are old or without Turbo Boost. Any suggestions on where to find laptops equipped with such microprocessors?

6 – Would be nice if the laptop is thin and light, though this is not a very important criterion for me. I know that some Sony VAIO and Samsung Series 9 models (new!) are ultra-slim and light. Is there any other manufacturer that makes slim and light laptops?

7 – I’m not a gamer, though it could be “nice” if the laptop has powerful video graphics. Nvidia or ATI? Which are the latest models? What is considered a good video card? Can you provide me with any tips concerning this point?

8 – Must include 2.0 megapixel webcam and integrated microphone.

8 – Solid State Drive storage – preferable, but not a must.

9 – USB 3 ports – a must

10 - E-Sata port – very very preferable

11 – Blu-Ray – desirable

I know that I’m asking for too much. However, I also know that I’ll have to compromise between these criteria when I’ll be buying my laptop. I would also be thankful if you could:

12 – provide me with the list of electronics shops except Interdiscount, Fust and Mediamarkt, as well as official distributors in Geneva

13 – provide me with any useful article on how to choose a good laptop, as well as with any other thing that I should pay attention when buying my laptop.

14 – provide me with any advice on where to buy my laptop. Is it cheaper from the US, Canada or Germany? If so, what’s the difference? 200 francs? 300?

I hope that I did not miss anything important.

Thank you.

You have largely described a 13-inch MacBook Air.

Alternatively, configure a laptop with a hires screen at Dell. Don't expect "silence", or lightness, if you go for performance, though - not at any price point. In fact, don't expect silence at all, unless you get a relatively weak, but convenient netbook. Anything over 3h battery life is optimistic. Here, the Air excels. Perhaps an iPad2 may fit your need..

Also, a RAM-upgrade may give you more usable performance than a faster processor.

For articles, see www.tomshardware.com and www.notebookcheck.com

For point 14, buy it locally. Customs will add a lot, anyway, but I understand from these specs that price is a secondary consideration.

I can't really help you, but just a note of caution: if you buy a laptop here or in France you'll get a French/Swiss keyboard, i.e. with the Y and Z keys reversed (not sure if this is the case for a MacBook).

Sounds like you've done a lot of research already

Didn't say what you needed it for primarily as that always helps or what your budget is as the sky can be the limit.

Also you need to make the distinction between mac and intel or athlon unless you have no preference.

Anyways here is one to start you off...have a look!

@OP have you gone to Manor or other places with laptops on display? You'll be able to get a feel for them in person.

IMHO, HP makes (made?) great printers, but I've always been disappointed with their computers, especially laptops.

You have listed a great many features and "musts" but if you know all that, then I'm surprised that you are asking for ideas here. go on cnet.com and enter your specs and see what pops out.

But.....

3 USB ports is a must!? really?

10 hours? good luck.

Silent, barely noticeable? Mac is great there, but I've never heard a silent Windows laptop.

Mac's have Wireless-N (for about the last 2-3 years), but not so much the WIndows laptops. But, for 30 CHF you can get a tiny USB receiver with WiFi-n. Plus, it's only really useful if you have a Wireless-N router.

1920 x 1080 - shouldn't be too hard to find. look at the labels on the laptop.

Processor - you use all the latest lingo and such, but, truly, what are you using the computer for? surfing the web? Email?  Or CAD and real-time video effects and editing and rendering, etc? Although it's nice to have the latest/greatest, unless you *know* why you need Sandy Bridge or whatever, don't worry about it too much.

Solid state? That's "nice" but I personally have no use for that. It's a pain in the ass to work on if something happens to the system. (if you spill wine on the keyboard or break the screen or whatever, I would normally remove the SATA hard disk, attach it to another computer to get the data off. much harder with Solid State)

webcam/microphone - even on Windows PCs, that's pretty standard these days. Macs, again, have had that for years.

Graphics - ok, you're not a gamer, so why worry about graphics? unless you are using programs which really push the limits of graphics, the standard GPU will be fine. VLC and YouTube are not very taxing.

e-sata - what, pray tell, are you going to do with e-sata? Just curious.

again, go to cnet.com buying guide and see what they say.

and come to me when you want it configured/setup, etc.

Oh, and don't PAY for Anti-Virus software. Please. The free versions are more than sufficient.

Re: Buying a new laptop

Thank you all for your comments.

@ FerneyL
1 - No, I don't want MacBook Air.
2 - I think silence is not equal to a weak netbook. I've seen really silent and powerful laptops.
3 - 3 hour battery life is not something unusual anymore.
4 - Generally you're right, it's better to have enough fast RAM and a relatively slow processor rather than vice versa.
5 - Thanks for the links! I'll check them.
6 - I plan to ask my friend to buy it from US or Canada. So, I will not have to pay for customs.
7 - As regards the price, it must be reasonable for what I pay. Certainly less than 1700-1800 CHF.

@ Edward
Thank you Edward, I'm already aware of the keyboard layout. Actually, you can request any shop English keyboard, which will cost you another 40-50 CHF.

@ Trevor L
1 - I need it for daily usage, as well as for doing CPU intensive work, such as processing big images, converting video and audio files, etc.
2 - Thanks for the links. I'll check them.

@ Zonker
1 - Yes, I were in Manor and Mediamarkt less than 2 months ago. I'm going to do it again this week.
2 - I've also heard many people complaining HP. HP is certainly not in the top list of manufacturers for me.
3 - Thanks for cnet.com. I'll check it. And as regards all the features, no, I don't know everything about them. For example, I don't know how to choose the right video graphics card. This is where I need some help.
4 - USB 3 - yes, it's a must for me. I have lots of personal data (mainly pics) that I prefer to store in an external hard disk. USB 3 is what I need to manage them quickly. + I use portable apps, which I usually keep in my USB. The faster is the USB key, the faster apps. work.
5 - Yes, 10 hours of battery life, check this published back in 2008:
http://www.networkworld.com/news/2008/081208-dell-unveils-19-hour-latitude.html
6 - I want built-in wireless n. And Yes, I need it. At home I have wireless n router. With the current wireless g, I get very bad connection in the sleeping room.
7 - I think you should certainly worry about the processor you buy. I've seen many laptops with other nice features, but crappy processor that made all your experience a nightmare. Moreover, it's about power efficiency, which also equals to less noise and heating, as well as lower electricity bill in the long term perspective, which ultimately means a greener world :)
8 - Thanks for the info about SSDs. I'll research more about it. And are there any laptops with SSD here in Geneva?
9 - Maybe you're right about the video graphics card. The matter is that I've had many problems with my current Intel integrated video card... BTW, occasionally I install some video games..
10 - e-sata - again for managing large quantities of pictures of have.
11 - Sure, I'll stick to MSE. It's simple, fast and reliable. I don't anything more than that because I don't visit webpages full of viruses.

Sorry on a bit of OT, but, where's the difference when taking the ssd out of the laptop and attaching it to another computer? It's the same format and connection, right?
