Buying furniture - worth doing in France? Any recommendations?

Hello everyone

I will soon be moving out of a shared apartment and into my own place

Which means.. I will need to buy a load of furniture! It will be very expensive and so was just wondering please:

(i) Whether it would be cheaper to buy in France, hire a van and drive to collect it/bring back to Geneva?

(ii) If anyone had any experience/practical advice in this? Can you claim french VAT back? I guess you are charged Swiss VAT when crossing the border?

(iii) If anyone had any recommendations for good quality/good value French furnture shops near the border? Something like Interio I guess, or is there an Ikea?

Many thanks in advance for any ideas / help!

All the best

Joe,

Try Cocktail Scandinave in Annecy, see their catalogue online, I'd say less expensive than IKEA and solid wood rather than just chipboard.

You'll have to declare what you buy at the French border to get the French VAT back (-20%) and then declare again at the Swiss border to pay the Swiss VAT (+8%). Go with several people as you get a deduction for each person.

Try these links - scroll down on the first one and you will find an answer re Annemase. I have been to Bo Concepts - very nice stuff - not sure of prices. As you will see in the second link there is a whole area of furniture shops in the same location. Good luck
