The edges of the big chunks seem straight from the angle they are shown, but the diagonal ones are not, and when they are moved around they make more or less space.

Yep.  You can in fact use trigonometry to prove it.  Count the squares:


- on the green zone, the diagonal has an angle of arctan(2/5) = arctan(14/35);


- on the blue zone, the diagonal has an angle of arctan(3/7) = arctan(15/35);


These values are different, therefore the big diagonal is not a straight line!


Otherwise, you could have infinite chocolate.
