Hi
we are moving to Geneva (or possibly France border) and have heard that there are issues bringing your english car into to Switzerland. Does anyone know anything about this?
Thanks
Olivia

Hi Olivia,
I would like to know the answer to this too. I touched on it with my insurance agent because I don't have my resident's permit yet (I'm from Australia), and you can't buy and register a car here until you have one, so I have been considering buying a car in England. I will follow it up and get back to you.
Regards,
Lisa.

Hi, I think after some (3 months probably) u are obliged by law to put a Swiss plate and make a car check-up... this is true for everybody not just British ... now, the problem is that u must keep ur car forever afterward ... who will ever buy a 2nd hand car in Switzerland with the steering wheel on the other side???Clearly if I import the car from Germany or Italy the steering wheel is on the "correct" side ;))) so I can sell it again ...
For Lisa, if you buy a car in England you must import it ... very very expensive ...u can import for free only if u purchased the car at least 6 months before moving here ...

We imported our car from Britain to Switzerland in March this year. Its pretty straightforward. You have 12 months to switch from UK to local plates.
