Car Pooling Costs - sort of following on from 5 francs for organising

From the other side of the fence, I want to GIVE people some francs for organising a trip, if they're kind enough to give me a lift in their car.

However, debating "how much" is usually met with "don't worry, I'd be going anyway" or "just buy me a beer" - which is lovely and generous of them, but I would be more comfortable if there was a rule of thumb that Glocals Members could follow/suggest,  (N.B. "Rule of Thumb" - not "Mandatory") to avoid two potential situations:

1. People like me feeling embarassed by constantly being the passenger and being a free-loader

2. Drivers making a profit and running an unlicensed taxi service (which I've heard happens - but not by MY friends, obviously!!).

According to various motoring sites, a "very average" cost for petrol and a bit extra would be 10CHF per 50 kms - which is still outrageously cheaper than a) the train or b) a round of beers.

Any thoughts - my lovely car driving friends???

So does that mean JT owes me 40 Chuffs for the drive to Moleson last year, plus interest?

How about equipment loan/hire ..how should that work and should there be a discount for self assembly??  Wink

In Germany.. we have pages..where you can have a look for such a service...the price is mainly.. the fuel price..

I made a short calculation.. :

Petrol: 1.730 CHF/l - 8 liter/100km = 13,84 ~14CHF/100km -7CHF/50km

Diesel: 1.720 CHF/l - 7 liter/100km = 12,04 ~12CHF/100km -6CHF/50km

If you say.. 10CHF.. it would be ok from my point of you..

Most of the time, I drive alone 99,9% and so.. I would get 50% of the fuel cost back.. perfect..

If you want to know the cost of a journey, fill in the TCS itinerary form online on website   http://www.tcs.ch   and it gives you a global read out at the end, of the distance, time and cost. (If it involves taking the autoroute then you will have to deduct the vignette which they seem to put automatically).

Then you divide that by the number of people in the car

.. sorry mistake.. All that info distance ..time and cost ..is at the beginning of the itinerary.

I've found it's useful when planning for long journeys and avoids scares, as they appear to update the costs of petrol etc.
