Car registration in Switzerland

I was wondering if I can register my car in Switzerland (get a Swiss plate) and get Swiss car insurance if I life in France? My situation is that I am living in France (directly at the Swiss border) but work in Switzerland. Hence, the car is to 90% driven in Switzerland. Now I am not sure if I can register the car in Switzerland or if I have to register it in France due to my domicile there.

Maybe somebody knows this :)

Thanks!

I think the SAN needed a copy of my residence permit and an attestation de résidence when I tried for registration.  Without these, I don't think you'll have success.

Just curious: Why not register it in France?

I do not know for sure but I am sure I read somewhere that if you are a frontalier you can have a Swiss registered car. I thought that you were just given different plates.

I could be wrong though!

Have you asked Zurich Insurance about your options?

France is my other option...but my French is rather bad and in France they refuse to communicate in English. In Switzerland you can usually get by with German or English.

How long have you had your car in France?

The French thing is a bit tricky if you dont really speak it. From what I have read about importing cars, insurance etc. Switzerland is hugely expensive. Their version of the MOT can be very expensive and insurance is quite a lot as well.

France on the other hand probably has a less stringent MOT and I am fairly sure their insurance is less.

Carrefour in Ferney sells an English newspaper that is based in and all about France. Perhaps they would have adverts from Insurance companies that may speak English and if you cant find anyone French speaking to help you with the paperwork etc it might be prudent to employ someone for half a day to help you.

Would offer to help but my Bonjour and Je suis Anglais wont help much!

I had the car now for over a year in France. With German plates and German insurance. And I own the car since two years...so there should be no problem with customs (because I think you just have to declare a new car that you own for less than 6 months.)

You are probably right about the cost factor...it's probably much cheaper to register and insure the car in France. It's just tricky to deal with insurances if you don't understand the conditions.

hi

i am importing a car from france so i have some infos that, i hope, can help you.

to get the swiss plate you need to have a address in switzerland, moreover you have to pay 12% of tax to the swiss custom plus some controls to make.

so it might be interesting if you have a new car because you can buy it tax free in europe and because the euro is low by now otherwise there is no interest.

concerning the cost of the insurance, i promise you france is less expensive than switzerland :-)

good luck!
