Does anyone know about how one can get student subsidized housing in Carouge? And any suggestions on which foyers may be preferable to others? I am having a difficult time finding temporary housing. The rooms listed in the market place are quite expensive.
Thanks in advance!
Also, any tips on flying from the U.S. to Geneva? Flights are very expensive too! (I am a poor graduate student =( ).

I fly in from Chicago, so I only know from there, but it is always cheaper for me to fly either to dublin on aer lingus and take something from there, or fly to CDG in Paris and take the tgv. (sometimes much cheaper sometimes not at all) United is offering a promo on cheap flight to London right now from most US cities, and from london flights are quite affordable as well as other options. http://www.united.com/page/article/0,6722,50469,00.html
Austin | $289** |
Baltimore | $223 |
Boston | $180 |
Chicago | $225 |
Cleveland | $304** |
Denver | $295 |
Kansas City | $210** |
Los Angeles | $225 |
Nashville | $200** |
New Orleans | $320 |
New York City | $175 |
Orlando | $279 |
Philadelphia | $255** |
Phoenix | $295 |
Providence | $200** |
San Francisco | $225 |
Seattle | $295 |
Washington Dulles | $200 |

I would suggest using www.kayak.com. I use it often because it will pull you up all airlines and find you the best price. I also would suggest changing somewhere over here as I find it to be cheaper. Though I have to say most of the flights even to the East Coast start at $500. I have yet in two years found anything cheaper than that. So I am assuming these flights exclude the taxes and fuel.
Good Luck!!

Thanks! I actually happen to be flying in from Chicago so that's great advice.
Also...what's typical rent for a room in a shared apartment. Some friends here tell me I should be able to find a place for around 500-700...but most places I've found thus far have been around 1000.

Hi There,
Geneva is a small city and public bus service is very good. You don't have to live inside Carouge to be convenient. It's a bit a tough city for student though. You will find rent for a room in a shared apartment for 500-700 CHF but it's very difficult to find something quickly.
Also all student hostels get fill up very quickly and most of the time you have to wait pretty long time. So call them right a way. I've been at L'Accueil while I was a student. You might try to call them because it's close to Carouge.
Good luck.

for housing, check these websites
http://www.ma-colocation.com/
http://www.etudiants.ch/
http://ch.easyroommate.com//index.aspx
http://www.anibis.ch/
...and, of course, the "market place" section of Glocals.
There is also a newspaper, called "la trouvaille" but I don't think they have a website.
I also suggest you to put an announce on these websites: you have lots of chances to be contacted!
