you'll soon realise that the cheap parking spot concept does not exist in Geneva...

The best is to ask your Régie whether they have parking places to rent. Otherwise, locate the closest public parking and look for an abonnement there: https://www.ge.ch/parkings/parkings/parkings_habitants.html . But you won't find cheap solutions for parking in Geneva anyway.

Expect to pay f300 per month for private parking pretty much anywhere in Geneva unless you are prepared to wait for a space (even then, expect to pay f200 a month).
I had this same problem when all the 'free' spaces in and around Carouge were repainted blue and became 'macaron' spaces.
If your car is not registered in the area you will not be able to buy a macaron, which would allow you to park on the road in a specific area, in a designated macaron space.
You could just accumulate tickets and not pay them. Depending on which country your car is registered in the tickets may or may not arrive at the registered address.
Of course, this is highly illegal and not encouraged at all. I certainly would not recommend doing it next to the river Arve at Acacias, opposite the Starling residence, where there are no parking signs at all, on the gravelly bit behind the cycle lane, where there are lots of other foreign registered cars not parked for the same reason..........

Thanks for the insight David!
The absolute cheapest I've seen for a spot on the street or a spot outside (apartment parking lot) is ~150chf per month. I have a spot in a garage for just over 200chf (in Champel), so they definitely do exist below the 300chf mark, you just have to be on the lookout. If you're working here, you can ask colleagues and/or check message boards (physical and electronic) at offices and university campus areas around Geneva. That's often the best way, and I do see spots advertised now and again.
And yes, parking here is horribly expensive, unless you can get some macaroni :-P
