Cheap(er) swiss health insurance.....

So I'm finally coming to the end of my Uk health insurance scheme and have to take swiss health insurance in August :-( I have been on comparis.ch and know that even the cheapest healthcare on there is hideously expensive (the quotes I've seen are around 3500-4000 CHF/yr). Just wondering if anyone has found anything cheaper. I'm also wondering if there is a cheaper insurance for teachers?

Any help/advice would be much appreciated! Thanks

hi emilie,

ask at your school if they have a group health insurance plan (i'm sure you probably have asked already ;-)

if they don't you'll find that assura is the cheapest. they do all their correspondance via email, and pass on the savings ( approx 2% ) to you.

but yes, it is more expensive than national health service (NHS) . the good news is that the basic health insurance covers you regardless of previous meical conditions!

Emilie

It'll partly depend on what cover you want, but you should be able to get a basic package for less than 3k CHF in Vaud if you take the risk of a higher 'franchise'. I switched from Assura (who put my premiums up a lot from last year) to EGK, and with the family doctor option (ie you have to consult before seeing a specialist) I managed to get a reasonable price.

Emilie,

A quick tip: you don't need to take the "assurance accident" option as it is already provided by your employer, by law.  This allows you to save a little.

Look at Comparis (as you already did): they list all the insurers on the market.

And follow Nicolas' advice: go for a higher self-participation fee, and for a model where you first have to see your family doctor or to call some insurance-sponsored health line before seeing a specialist. Those things lower your premium significantly.
