Checking a dentist's bill

How can you check that the bill you get from a dentist is correct? I got just a letter from mine with a whole list of numbers referring to treatment.I have no idea what these mean.

bill comes to about CHF 1,000!

Is a dentist obliged to explain what the codes mean and what each of the treatments cost?

In the dentist's bill there should be the list of treatments with codes. If your bill only mentions the codes you should ask your dentist to explain you the meaning. Have you tried?

1000 CHF is not an exceptional cost for a dental care, that's the normal price for a root canal.

One uses “on” a great deal in business French.  Especially when one isn’t using “nous”.

Whenever I read that a simple request of mine has received “toute notre attention”, I have the vision of the whole office sitting in formal session to decide how best to avoid giving me a straight answer.

More seriously, did your dentist “sur-estimé” or “sous-estimé” your dental need?

Best wishes anyway, R.

this may come as a surprise,  but normally, if your dentist is a member of the swiss romande dental association, the invoices are standard issue and have the codes printed on the back of the invoice. i once had a dentist who was thrown out of the association but continued to use the official letterhead on his invoices but without the codes printed on the back of the invoice! when i requested a detailed invoice of the work that had been done, he never replied!

You always have the right to ask for explanation when it comes to paying money for it ;-)...

Thanks everyone.Thanks for correction Ritchie.

By the way,I know " on" is used in business, but as he was speaking to me,not writing, and there is no one else there ( no receptionist,no assistant, nothing - a real one- man show,it seemed odd :-)

In English, the verbal use of “One” instead of “I” or “We” is rarely heard these days but it is still frequent in French speech, being used as a stylish alternative to “I”.

In the particular case, I’d say it was intended as an acknowledgement that he had failed to assess the situation correctly.

While this can happen to anyone, an honest practitioner will normally tell the patient that the situation is more serious than he initially thought and both sides can then decide on what to do next.

Going off piste a tad, but I love the use of "One" in the English language.  It gives a peculiary, sardonic air, often found only amongst members of the British Artistocracy.

It's also very useful for being ambiguous when you're actually trying to make a point without insulting anyone whilst adding a notion of sarcasm.

It'salso fabulously useful when there are Americans in the room - totally flumoxxes them!

Does one not agree?

(However when a dentist uses it in a one-to-one conversation, it does sound a bit wanker-ish!!)
