Chommage is valid after you have worked for 12 months minimum, resident in Switzerland,  and your firm has been paying the social insurance as deducted from your salary.

Mmmmm, thank you Charlie…

for "resident " in Switzerland they mean since when I’ve started my job (and so pay taxes) or since when I’ll receive the permit (which I still have to get but I’m working since August)?

Cheers  :)

that "when you claim" chommage you have a swiss address... :)))

permits are a formality... once youre "in the process" youre basically legal.

My understanding of the Chomage rules is that as long as you have a valid work permit, you can get Chomage. Saying that, if your work contract is just good for one year, you dont have the right to work or residence in CH. Further would not be eligible for unemployment.

But there are so many rules, its always best to contact the Office de Emploi or even Chomage department. Sorry but online in French

Just because you pay the unemployment 'insurance' does not mean you have the right to benefit from it. Yeah, this is a strange Swiss logic. But its because the Unemployment benefit is to help you find a job in CH, but if oyu have no right to stay working here, you should not benefit for no reason to the Swiss economy. As such you must return to your home country and request the benefits. Good luck.

I think the logic is quite reasonable. If you intend to stay and work - and loose your job after a couple of years - you are entitled. Not just after 3 months of being here.

In that case the system would very quickly become un-affordable because Switzerland would be flooded with "fortune seakers"

The system as such as I see it is a safety net - so that you don't end up on the street. But I can understand that they would require you to pay your fair share for it first.

My point about the logic, is that everyone pays for the unemployment insurance, but only long term permanant Swiss residence benefit from this. They contribute to the system/insurance coverage but get nothing, so is this Swiss 'logical'. As example many US Nationals work on 1or2 years contracts, paying the insurance but they cant benefit for this safety net?

Dave,

I see where you are comming from. But since when is something free in life? Don't you think that somebody must first pay a little bit into the system before you get something back? I can't see why it's not fair that somebody who's worked for 6 months is suddenly entitled to chomage whilst not having paid one full salary into the "insurance". Normally you should have that in your home country than no? I have been here longer, so I lost my title to these benefits back there, but that's replace with the security here. Again - if everybody would get it after just a couple of months it would not be sustainable.

In my personal opinion it's fair that one expects you to reasonably contribute to something 1st - be it having a C permit - or a B for at least a couple of years. Otherwise it will never work and "sucked" dry within a very short time span.
