Christmas in Geneva - fun things to do ?

I have my family coming over for Christmas and I am looking for ideas for fun things to do . There will be ten of us ranging in age from 10 to 75 and including teens and young adults

I don't particularly want to traipse over to Montreux for the Christmas market ... looking for something a little less usual really but all ideas welcome !

We have 2 cars so not confined to Geneva itself

Thanks !

The lack of response to your question is not surprising. All my suggestions are outside Geneva, some a bit far.

In terms of sightseeing I could recommend:

- Lyon. Great city, especially the old town. Nice for shopping and restaurants. Everyone (age 10-75) should enjoy the film museum in the old town: Musée des Miniatures et Décors du Cinéma, http://www.mimlyon.com/

- Yvoire. Easy to reach (car or boat), walk around for 2 hours and have a meal.

- Gruyere (90 minutes from Geneva): castle, cheese museum (nice place for fondue lunch), and if it's open you can take the cable car up for the view at Moleson. There's also the Cailler chocolate factory nearby with a small exhibition.

- There's a "music machine" museum near Martigny in France. Quite nice: Musee de la Musique Mechanique, http://www.musicmecalesgets.org/

Try the Artist's Pub for karaoke almost every day ... it's in Versoix and will exceptionally be closed on the 30th and 31st.   For a group of 10 and with reservation they may give you a chance at karaoke before the normal 10 PM starting time for the general public... Huge collection of songs in almost all languages including English Christmas songs....

Other cool options are Casino d'Evian with reasonably priced good restaurant looking onto the slot machine action Smile.... the town is filled with "flottins".. these are sculptures of all shapes and sizes made exclusively of driftwood... some are animals,, others are monsters and they have taken over the town... Sundays are busy and many shops are open...   Much nicer than Yvoire at this time of year but you can stop in Yvoire on the way there.  Driving time from Meyrin is one hour and 10 minutes... take the belt road around Thonon but the weekly market in Thonon is on Thursday and there are plenty of bargains... market in Evian is small but nice on Tuesdays and slightly bigger on Fridays.   Ferney Voltaire market on Saturday morning is nice but expensive. Casino de Divonne is an option closer to home.

Visit the historic castle at Chillon just beyond  Montreux.  Lots of interest  and fun for all ages.

Avoid the motorway by taking the more scenic lake road to go there and return through the villages of Vaud and into Geneva.

If the weather’s like today, the views will be superb.

Good luck, R.

Annecy, where else?

Catch the Noel des Alpes:

http://www.annecy.fr/620-noel-des-alpes-2012.htm

The city is all dressed up and tomorrow, you will have the circus at 15:00, Floating lanterns at 18:30, you can visit the castle during the day, go for a boat tour (as long or as short as you want), the old town is beautiful, the restaurants great.

Vitam Park next to Macumba in Saint Julien only 5 minutes beyond the border of Bardonnex.... indoor adventure walks on cables, boards and the likes (like the outdoor tree versions), a duck the laser game, heated indoor and outdoor swimming pools, walls to climb, labyrinth and ball type play area... serveral cafeterias, Mc Donalds, Migros store open on Sunday too and some other retail businesses...

Macumba dancing on 6 dance floors and several restaurants is next door... and across the street a bit over is the Saint Julien Casino...

A previous post mentions Gruyère (Gruyères is the town and Gruyère the district).. it is not known to all that there is a very interesting museum near the castle.  This is the Gyger museum.  Gyger is the Swiss guy who designed all the backdrops and monsters in the "Alien" movies.  Scary stuff but for all ages.  Across from the museum there's the Gyger café where you can sit in that scary decor and sip a drink while swiveling around in some monsterous chairs.

You could add on a drive to Morat/Murten a very nice medieval town on a small lake surrounded by it's old walls. Morat is the name in French and Murten in German since you are at the language border here.  You may as well also continue to Bern ,Switzerland's capital and one of it's most beutiful towns really well worth a visit.  Driving time to Bern is just over 90 minutes from Geneva.  That visit would require special preparation in order to really take advantage of the sights there.

Instead of going North to Bern and Morat from Gruyères you could choose to go to Le Pays d'en Haut to Chateau d'Oex (a ballooning platform too), Rougemont and then on to Gstaad before coming around via Col de Pillon to Aigle in the Valais and back to Geneva.

Just thought of another fun thing... go to the airport and at the restaurant "La Rotisserie" across from the Migros there and on the terrace (it's indoor, have no fear) they have a golf drive simulator.. quite impressive... you can sit next to it with a couple of tables pulled together to seat 10 and take turns with the irons.... either eat or drink depending on time of day... today the "plat du jour" was filets de perches with french fries (ok, chips for some ;-) and salad for 19 francs.   If you decide not to eat there you can go upstairs in the main building at the departure level and try the big food court with a Burger King, asian wok and loads more to finish at Strarbucks if you're into expensive coffee...

Anyway lots of shopping too and perfect for a rainy day including Sunday.
