Combining Member Activities and Events into one section

Howdy folks

We're thinking of combining/unifying the Member-Activities feature & the Events feature into 1 section, and we wanted to ask for your feedback BEFORE we do anything.

Here's some details, thanks for your thoughts...

CURRENT SITUATION
Currently, we have 2 separate sections:
1. Member Activities – for organizing non commercial activities, and inviting other members to join (not for promoters/companies/businesses)
2. Events - for announcing commercial events (mostly by promoters/companies/businesses)

WHY WE'RE THINKING OF COMBINING ACTIVITIES & EVENTS
We think it might be easier for users to see all upcoming things (Activities and commercial Events) in one place, instead of having to move between 2 sections.

HOW THE COMBINED ACTIVITES & EVENTS FUNCTION WORK?
- The person posting the ad would indicate if he/she is posting a Member Activity (non-commercial) or a Commercial Event.
- T
he people viewing the ad would be able to select if they want to see: Only Member Activities, Only Events, or Both together.

WHAT DO YOU THINK?
So, after reading the long explanation...
Would unifying the Member Activities and the Events sections into 1 section make your lives easier, and make these sections more useful, or would you prefer that we keep the current separation between Member Activities and Events?

Thanks alot for your input

Oded

Hey Oded,

I think the current separation is fine, there are some days that we have 10 or more member activities, and I can only imagine it will be more over time. If you include the commercial events, I think it might just be too crowded.

In fact, I was even thinking it might be a good idea to separate different types of member activities as we go along, maybe putting a filter member activities like "going out", "day-trip" etc. to see only these kind of activities.

Cheers!

Hi Oded,

I think it is good to keep them under separate tabs. But I would like to propose:

- to move the 'Events' tab and put it directly to the right of the 'Member Activities' tab,

- to rename the 'Events' tab to 'Other activities' tab (as Events covers both commercial activities, and information given by members about any activities, free or priced).

Cheers

Hi Oded,

I think it would be a good idea to merge the member activities and Events. Mostly because somehow I always skip gng to the events page and later on realise that I missed some Event. I didnt know the diff between the member activities and events b4 u explained it in your post and was wondering y they were kept seperately!! :P

To have the two of them together with options for viewing only events/ memberactivities/ together is a good option.

[b]I totally agree with kimerton. Unifying the Member Activities and the Events will make our lives easier, faster and these sections more effective.

It will be fantastic thing to do Oded. You might try to keep a option (without switching page) inside combined section to see separately events or member activities.

Thanks.

for me, combining events and member activities is a great idea!

in order to show what kind of event is, another menu could be added:

-event I' m attending

-event I'm not attending, but which may interest you

-event I'm organizing, without commercial purpose

-event I'm organizing, with commercial purpose

another improvement I would like to suggest about event is about the city search engine:

-permitting multiple choice when selecting cities (both on settings and events)

-eliminating the option "geneva+lausanne" (90% of activities are in Geneva)

i'd rather they were kept separate. i agree with Rasputin that there'd be too many things on one page, and i also agree with whoever said 'events' and 'activities' tabs should be next to each other, maybe also adding a short explanation about the difference at the top would be good.

Combine and Qualify. Acitivities and events could be qualified by clicking boxes ''commercial for profit'', ''glocals community based'', ''non-profit'' ''etc. It should be easier for user while indicating the motive of the activity/event poster.

YES, ABSOLUTELY!

I sometimes forget to have a look in the events section, and miss things of interest. I think it would be great if the two sections merged, just like a Geneve Agenda : What's on tonight, this weekend, etc?

I think it's hard enough to keep track of everything and playing around with our agendas between work nights / friends nights / things organized through Glocals / things organized through Facebook / family nights, etc) so it would be great if the two Glocals sections became only one.

Yes, merge them! I've never understood the point in this divide anyway. It would be more useful to create sub-sections like 'culture', 'sports', 'social activities' etc instead.

I’d rather keep them separated, as they’re not the same thing at all (if you go to an activity, you’re sure to be in good glocals company, which is not the case of events).

But I see that many great people support a merger. So why not to reconcile both positions ? Merge the two sections, but allow those who want to settle their defaults options so as to see only activities if they want it that way.

Customization is the key !
