The Hudson.... probably the smallest rooms I have stayed in in manhatten... plus you can lie in bed and bizarrely see through a window at the end of the bed into the shower.... cool bar though:

i would say its a very trendy hotel.... not really for an older lady, she may enjoy the Waldorf more, traditional, and it caters well- also they do deals on rates.
the smaller hotels tend to be less functional and cater less to the older crowd in my experience, but then im often wrong

...especially after sunset.
Maybe try Hotel 99? The bathrooms are communal but it's very nice.
I've stayed at the Metro, http://www.hotelmetronyc.com/
Its in a very good location, across the road from the Empire State Building. Rooms were nice an comfortable.
I'd definitely stay there again.
