Has anyone recently engaged a builder to construct a wooden decking in Geneva? What did you pay for the labour per square meter of decking (excluding material)?
I recenlty got a quote for CHF170 per square metre for the construction labour, excluding material. Is this a reasonable charge? I have about 50m2 of cobblestone terrasse that I want to cover with wooden decking.

Well that's CHF 8'500 for the labour. I think I will quit my daytime job to start installing decks ! Better still I'll take a week of vacation & you pay me cash.
Well I reckon it should take a pro about 4 man days to do such a job, so that works out to over CHF 2'100 per day. On top of which, he probably hires imported labor on the cheap at CHF 20 per hour that do most of the work.
So if you know which end of the hammer to hold, you can probably do it yourself in 3 weekends, especially with the modern decking systems. Check with the specialty companies that do this, even try in France. If you do hire an independant, tell him you'll give him 25% in cash the day he shows up and the rest when he's finished (ie in 4 days). So that's well under CHF 2'000 !!

Thanks. I doubted his rate after he started to raise it from EUR30/sq.m to CHF50/sq.m and two weeks later CHF170/sq.m.
I'll probably get a few more quotes to gauge the "market" rate. I'm not in a hurry.
