Cow breath and tourism in Swissland
I was leafing through a Swissland travel-guide some time ago when I stumbled upon the following gem. I know nobody will believe me so here's the reference: Fodor's Switzerland (sic), 44th edition (2007; p. 17).
... the sound of cowbells tinkling is a happy indiscipline. This is a sound many travelers often later hear in their dreams. Get up close to these pretty brown-and-white livestock and you can smell their sweet breath. Testament to all the sweet grass (which also go in many of the world's top perfume) they've munched ...
Now hold on just one minute!! I know that travel-guides don't always get it quite right (e.g. the Lonely Planet boycott), but seriously: what kind of kkrazy sh!t is this?!?! Which shadowy organisation is behind this?

And more importantly, does any one of you have any first hand experience of this??? How does cow's breath really smell?

Cow's breath is undoubtfully nice compared to some others (especially 16 year old half-breed terrier, semi-toothless dog).

It smells indeed something rather close to cut grass, somehow more slobbery.

For the story, how do I know that?

When I was 14, I was flying model sailplanes at the top of the Saleve mountain with a friend of mine. I launched his huge 5.4 m wingspan model when I slip on a cowpat and fell right into it. 10 minutes later, probably because I was smelling something closer to the cow than to human, a cow came to me and began to scratch it's head on my back and lick my face and hands... I couldn't get rid of her love demonstrations till I left the place.

That's how I know about cow breath.

Syd.

PS: The one after that was one of the best shower I took ever.

PS2: Yes, Nnir, I took her phone number... ;-)

Oof, Casuistik!

So if we're to believe Isa413, humans can't smell cow breath, but Syd_Brown can. Interesting. Maybe he just thought he could smell it... Y'know they do say that the senses of taste and smell are very closely linked...

(Sorry Syd, Thanks for the story)

i've seen dog shows and cat shows, but i recently saw on the swiss news about a beauty pageant for cows somewhere in Switzerland.  apparently it's a big competition that people take seriously and come from all parts to compete in

some black & white cow won top prize this year. but IMHO... they all looked the same.

I was in the US last week and I happened to attend the Washington County Fair in Rhode Island. Since the last county fair I had been to was the Orange County Fair in California some 10+ years ago, I was really in for a surprise.

Well, probably more so because Washington County is much more rural than Orange County rather than the fact that it had been a long time since my last one. First of all, animals such as sheep, pigs, rabbits, chicken, cows, etc. were everywhere! They had contests for every single one!

But the reason I am sharing this with you is because of the cow stalls. Each stall had a chest in front of it with a name (like Christine McCorrick) painted onto it. We learned that each cow had a groomer/caretaker young teenage girl and that the chests were full of their tools/brushes/etc. I didn't see anyone brushing a cow's teeth but those were really the most clean and beautiful cows I have seen to this day.

It's true -- due to the iron content of their blood, cows around the world do tend to stand facing magnetic north. However, this is the source of major political and economic concern. When the Earth's magnetic field flips, as it does every 250,000 years, it'll be like student cow tipping of apocalyptic proportions. The bovine geophysical disaster. The Chinese all jumping up and down at the same time would be nothing compared to this.

You may think every 250,000 years doesn't sound too bad. Those eggheads will have come up with something by then, you probably think. But the next field reversal is expected a week on Tuesday!

Do the governments of the world listen when I tell them this? NO!!!
