Curry Club regulars...thoughts on Royal India...
Hello all,

Vinnay wants to put his prices up to chf40 from chf35 for his usual buffet.

I'm not keen on the idea, but I said I would ask everyone else what they thought.

So what's your thoughts?

I'm with the girls on this one - in comparison to Lady G's, Vinay's curry just about passes muster (but God, those tin plates - horrendous!!), but doesn't justify a hike in the price. Like Ros's suggestion to have the curry nights at Lady G's. :-) Can we...?

i understand what vinnay is trying to do, but he just must accept that 50-60 people all receiving the same menu is a very advantageous evening for his restaurant. in fact he should put the price down as :

1 he would not fill his restaurant on a given wednesday night.

2 he would have to pay his staff even if the restaurant was only 1/4 full

3 the marginal returns on each table would be quite small if each person ordered

 a different menu.

so, tell vinnay that after having done our calculations we agree to pay him 30 frs

per person if we have 50 people or more. and 35 per person if we are below 45.

and if we are blow 35 people......we should all go to the godiva anyway :-) :w00t:

NO NO NO

Most of us know what we can expect for our money by now. All places have their pros and cons. At Vinays i would say we have some fun together...good interaction but the food is very very average. At Lady G's i think we lose the atmosphere (maybe because we are much bigger group) but the food is great (and cheaper).

So Vinay, put your price up and i think we will all vote with our feet.

Agree with previous posts. While Vinay's place has the advantage of us having the restaurant to ourselves, the curry is not the best we have had. CHF 35 is the highest I would be prepared to pay there (and CHF 30 would be even better) - plus drinks ;-)

Compared to Shahi, Little India, LagyG, ... the food at the Royal India is really not top range, but the price certainly would be. I really don't think that what we are currently getting at the Royal India is worth the 40 francs...:w00t:

What is Vinay's justification for putting the price up? The huge investment into the new plates? The costs of the onion bajis cause Switzerland was recently hit by a major onion shortage nobody else has heard of? Or is he charging us now for his Bollywood dancing entertainment (..or do we have to pay extra now for him to stop)? ;)

Epicure actually makes a very valid point with his calculations. I would also like to add that the Royal India is the only restaurant were we get a buffet (except LadyG, which is a pub with a slightly different arrangement altogether). So self-service for the evening means that the Royal India might even need less staff while catering for a full-house...

...maybe a bit too sure to have us as regulars...

Ok... seems to be a big fat ´no´ so far.  Yes when compared to the food at the LadyG´s it puts not just the Royal India, but every Geneva Indian restaurant to shame... and for the price too!!  Yes, we´ll certainly do that again.

I think Julian´s comment about ´Golden Goose´ is a familiar and relevant term - As too was Roger´s comment about price adjustments per number of people (economies of scale for those of you that want to dig out your Uni notes) - but a very valid point.

Anyway, there´s a lot of restaurants that we´ll be trying for the first time, as well as some old favourites.  We´ll keep the Royal on the list, but we´ll certainly not pay more than 35chf, maybe less with a large number.

Thanks for your comments... keep them coming if you want to have your say on the matter.
