I live in an old building, my alcoholic neighbour smokes in the stairwell, and it all comes right into my hall because the sealing of my front door is ancient and non-functional. The regie does not give a hoot, so I decided that I should do something about it myself, but I have no experience in DIY whatsoever. My plan is to go to a Brico store on Saturday and ask the assistants to advise me, get some sealing tape and glue and just do it. But I thought I would shoot the question here too, in case someone has some advice for me about how to do it and what to be careful with. Thanks so much in advance!

I think you should go to ASLOCA for advice before you attempt any DIY, because it’s up to the Régie to do something about the nuisance caused by your neighbour.

I agree with ASLOCA, you need to get a number before because most offices have a rendevous timing. Here is a helpful link. http://www.asloca.ch/
As if you do make changes in the appartment or if there are issues of the sort the owner of the building needs to be able to work towards fixing it. This is incase of rental appartments in which you do not own the walls. It is very helpful as well just take there contact number from the website and make a reservation for a rendevous. As well at the end of your stay if the upset or annoyed landlord tries to over price your charges you are also able to go to them and make an offical complaint. 3 months ago I was charged 4500 CHF for damages made due to ventelation system in the bathroom there was mould growing. Not only this but the extra charges were way over board, Asloca was a great deal of help, my charges dropped from 4500 to the landlord was forced to pay me back an amount of 1200 CHF due to unsufficient care of the bathroom system, as well the insurance company ALLIANZ had pointed me out to them. They do take charges but are completley worth it.

It sounds like your front foor is not tight. I'd get the rubber strips used for fixing door/windows for drafts. ("Joint de calfeutrage"). Price around 10CHF. These strips are frequenly posed by renters, so I doubt if you need perfmission from the regie. But I'm not a lawyer.
E.g.: http://www.tesa.com/consumer/tesamoll/insulating_doors
To see where the door is leting through the smoke, you can use a candle. Wherever there is a draft, the flame will move.

Thanks so much Tawb. This is exactly what there is on the door, except that it is so old that it is falling apart. I don't need to have a candle to see where the air is coming in: the entire rubber strip needs to be changed, it has disentagrated almost completely. I would think (and hope) also that this much alteration cannot be an issue.

Something else to mention: take photos of the door as it now is!
