Yes, as far as I know, it's true and you now need to either not drive or to retake the licence in Switzerland. You might want to check with police for the latest info, though.

Mine was expired for 6 months and they still renewed it. If I were you Id first try to have it renewed before dragging any attention from the police..

Osman - yes you need to move quick.  Not being European Union will affect what you have to do - but as ThomasNL says - don't even think about asking the police - guaranteed a fine just for raising the question.  Answers should be provided here:

Good luck and get it sorted sooner, rather than later.

Yoy definetely need to change the license after 12 months being in Switzerland. The procedure is quite simple.

First-you should go Office cantonal des automobiles et de la navigation with your swiss permit, original driving license, filled form for changing the driving license (see the website), the note of opticien on it and photo. There you are scheduling the time and date for your driving exam. Be ready to pay 150 CHF for that exam.

Second-you are coming to the exam with your car registered in Swiss with your original driving license. If you need the translator you can hire only sertified one (the list you can get in the Office aswell) You leaveyour license in the Office, together with instructor go in your car to demonstrate your driving skills (around 30-40 min driving around the town). If your style is accepted, you pay 150 CHF more and get your new swiss license immediately at the Office.

If not-you say good bye to your original license and check what you can do further. This is the procedure in Geneva. May be there is something different in Lausanne. Good luck!

Hi Osman,

Not sure what the rules for Turkey are, but I converted my US driving license into a Swiss one after about 20 months of being here. The rule says not to drive after 12 months. There is no limit on when you can convert your original license as long as its not expired.

Hope this helps,

Kedar
