It is rather difficult for us to judge unless there are others who work for the same organisation.

What is this? A game where we are supposed to guess what happened to you?

OK, I'll start: you shaved for an interview with them, they mistaken you for a girl and that's the reason why you didn't get the job. Close?

It happens everywhere! In UNO happens as well. Depends on who is the manager and what kind of person he/she wants. People want to be surrounded by their friends and they definitely go for someone they know. Merit plays a very small role since its non-profit org. If you want to work there, keep networking and apply for field jobs, starting at headquarters can be difficlut if you dont have contacts inside.

I have different experiences in different countries. A place where the HC/CD or RR were a certain nationality, the majority of the staff was coming from the same kind of areas. It is very naive to expect a fair recruitment, though it must be happening somewhere. For 99% of advertised posts they have someone already sitting on that post, advertising is just a formality BUT never give up and keep applying, you never know. Only the competitive tests are very fair but again you score more in them if you have UN experience ;)

PS: No post is stupid as some might make you feel so here, it seems to be a normal practice for some, and dont feel down if "someone" is taking his shit out in your post, feel sorry and pity for them for not being blessed with making someone smile but rather being cursed for always offending others.

Or maybe I'm showing him more respect than you: when I somehow demand that he shared what's actually bothering him, I'm addressing an adult, while you are treating him like a kid by condoning his childish whining...

I'm with Casuistik on this.  Opening a discussion on a controversial subject without offering any input to it is Trolling and shouldn't be encouraged; it just causes pointless arguments.

Well Alex, good luck with your next job interview. Would you want to work in a place that was so narrow minded anyway?  Switzerland is getting a bad name for discrimination.

No I am not treating him like a kid, we all have dreams and sometimes when they are not coming true and we are at the verge of giving up we might end up feeling low and try to share that with other people, be it family, friends or a forum like glocals, whats wrong in it? Some words for comfort and encouragement, even from a stranger might lift our spirits. Or do you want everyone to be like yourself? Cant you accept diversity? Is it so hard for you to be nice to someone for a change?

Iam curios about the link of Switzerland and the UN descrimination.

From what I understand, most employment decisions at UN/NGO's in Geneva are done by non-Swiss, and quota's?

I think most the quota's are based on Membership contirubutions. And the quotas are for the various organizations that have offices worldwide and not just based on the Geneva staff.

but i could be wrong and we need to ask the trolling 'Troll' or Oprah, but she is right now going threw a Nervous Breakdown, see the news..

I'm confused now, but I can tell you one thing: I wouldn't hire Alex.

That's not based on his religion or color, but because he clearly doesn't know how to communicate so people can understand him, and because he insinuates something as serious as discrimination without backing it up.

Alex, why are you using someone else photo for your profile?

Not confident with your own face, hoping more ladies will like your profile?

I think glocals dont like people putting photos that are not of themselves?

Alex, on your profile you put '"“i need to be accepted just the way i am" but you dont trust others will accept you just the way you are?

There's Sepp blatter as well!

But one shouldn't generalise based on the behaviour of a few idiots, nobody on the site can claim to come from somewhere where there's no discrimination. In Switzerland it's refreshing how open people are to express mild, if misguided, prejudism rather than covering it up.

Richard H.

you are absolutely right,

we have discrimination everywhere in the world

but my point is that the UNO is not meant to be an organization with discrimination

Giving Few Example

Director of Conferences of UNO is a Russian, he only prefer Russian Secretary and Staff, if not Russian then he pick only ppl from Former Russian Republics

HR of WHO is a French Lady and she prefere that all staff around her should be french speaking or French

Previously the post of HR was vacant and a very good candidate from

Mauritius  with relevent experience was there, but since

Mauritius  is politically weak country, France impose this lady for the post,

also i should tell you that i m not from Mauritius  or the regions

I also think it's a bit weird he's using someone else's photo when we know it's clearly not him. This could could lead one to wonder why he felt compelled to do that.

I guess we should just accept the way we look without resorting to posting other people's pictures in a bid to impress people. Laughing

Many people from muslim origin have a habit to present themselves in social networks using other people's pictures.

I'm not quite sure why, it's in the culture I guess.

Why can't xenophobics just shut up and stop linking everything with religion and stop generalising!

I know from a few Iranian friends who do that that it's partly because they're worried that their government is tracking them, which may or may not be a valid concern.

Frankly I think there's little wrong with this; it's similar to forum members who haven't got a photo.

I mind Alex's posts more than his photo. He sounds like a frustrated job seeker to me (or a friend/relative of one).

A Russian director who prefers a Russian secretary or an HR manager who prefers French speakers, neither are examples of racial or religious discrimination. At most it's evidence of bias, but this is commonplace in any large organization where relationships and networking are important. .

And you wonder why? Europe gets more and more stuff "dictated" to it. Long toes are getting longer on both sides. What's wrong with a little bit adjusting to the local customs instead of insisting on burka's - minarets etc.etc. - and the xenophobes opening up a bit for foreign cultures?. it could be such a nice place (so far the dream about teletubby land). Attacks like in Kenia are not helping either.

I think our freedom is our greatest good - freedom of religion, speech etc.etc. but... religion (any religion) reduces freedom of an individual. Religion should be like a hobby - done in your private space - in your private atmosphere. It has nothing to do in public life, or in politics, in justice, at schools. etcetc. And if you are a guest, you adjust to the local customs is IMHO.... Too many things are demanded, respect as a starter. A thing which should be earned. Perhaps all groups should do a little bit of self reflection - it would help in stead of these long toes like your quoted text above.

Perhaps everybody should get rid of this "us and them" feelings!!! We are all the same.

Thanks Dave. Clearly me hitting the gym everyday since this 'before' picture of me at the Prangins airshow was taken on August 17th shows just what can be done if you're willing to put the hours in.

Either that or it's a Catholic thing as I hear a lot of the never use their own photos for profiles! Right, I'm off down the gym for some more double-splitting sessions!

No sadly I can't because as you can see from my picture I'm too ripped. Laughing

I'm still waiting for Alex to put his real picture on. I'm surprised as thought if he was going to go for the epitome of the ultimate Indian male he would've gone with this one. Especially when he gives women ... the look!

Catholics are also a problem for Glocals event organisers.  They tend to pull out at the last minute.

Sep 25, 13 13:17

Do you know the statistics of how many women wear burka? I am totally against the niqab (covering the face) myself and I am Muslim. Why do you generalise? Attack in Kenya and all Muslims are terrorists, attack on Navy office in US, a mad man with mental problem. Why do you have to put all of us in the same frame? Perhaps you are a xenophobe and wants to offend! Right? Just look at glocals or Facebook, there are many many people with weird photos as their profile photo, each must have a reason for doing so, why pick on Muslims? I am Muslim and I chose not to have my photo and someone else is not and still chose to not show her photo, what's the difference? If you say religion is private then mind your business and stop picking on our private stuff!

At most it's evidence of bias, but this is commonplace in any large organization where relationships and networking are important. .

Sep 25, 13 12:47

I agree with you Edward. Having worked in HR, I can confirm that managers are comfortable with someone they know rather than a total stranger. I have had requests from (e.g) a Dutch manager wanting a certain Indian only because they worked together before and knew each other. So it's not racial or religious discrimination, it's just because people want to keep their jobs and want to avoid problems and if they are surrounded by their own friends and clubs, they feel easy and safe. It's all still wrong but show me a place where it's not like that. Even in medical profession it happens, where merit should be the only reason to get a good job.

You are wrong! If you have to bring something to discussion and claim to have knowledge of it then you better go and educated yourself first. With this kind of knowledge I wont even discuss the basic things in Islam with you,  I dont envy banging my head with the wall. If you have an opinion go and post on the political forum. Dont take your frustration out on me and my private (religion) stuff please!

Cool, you are a true believer. What's there to explain when someone is a true believer... hey, what's even there to understand!

On a lighter notice, could you please talk to me about my frustrations, you seem to know so much about them... and you appear to be so fulfilled yourself.

Did I claim to be a true believer? Or you just made an image of me in your brain? And why would I talk to you about religion and answer yur questions when I know your cup if full and you already know what you want to think about us? If it was  coming from someone with a genuine interest it would be different, but I really have to fool myself by getting into a discussion with you. And I agree with admin, please keep the religion out of it!
