Documents needed to purchase a car?

Following my earlier post regarding the purchase of a voiture d'occasion for a one year stay in Geneva, I have been told that one cannot purchase and register a car without the Carte de Légitimation. Is this correct?

TX again for the great help on glocals!

The text you are quoting:

Pretty much true i thinks ..  The "grey card" thing is required and also a certificate of insurance. I think the emmissions certificate is not needed now?

You can purchase the car I guess but not register it and get number plates without these dicuments.  The office des autos will want to see these plus your ID, permit, passport or something.

In order to register a car, you will Indeed need to have a valid Swiss permit (L, B, C, legitimation card, etc...), and you will be getting temporary or long term car plates depending of it.
