Doggies! Living in FR, walking in CH - possible??

Hi

I'm looking for info/advice from 'pet-parents' who live in FR.  Is it possible to take FR registered dogs walking/travelling in CH?  Is it 'easy' to do, or a bit of a nightmare?  Would the dogs also need CH/Geneve registration?  Any advice/info gratefully received.

Thanks!

Vanessa

p.s. I have already looked at the 'What about dogs' post which is really useful/interesting, but doesn't cover this topic.

Vanessa - not sure what FR does but Swiss provides a dog passport which means you can take them across border - although I have neve had to use it. My kennels used to be in France and it was never a problem so I imagine the reverse applies. As long as you have a record of immmunisations etc then all should be ok I imagine (although I stand to be corrected)

Hi Vanessa,

I lived in France and brought my dog into Switzerland almost on a daily basis. You will not have a problem provided your dog is up to date with vaccinations ( I would always carry the passport with me or have it in the car). If you are planning to use the trains you must buy a ticket for the dog in Switzerland and if you plan to use the TPG you must buy a reduced fare ticket for your dog if he/she cannot sit on your knee.

I would propose that you regester your dog who should be microchipped with the following Swiss agency: http://www.anis.ch/fr/qui-sommes-nous/contact/ it is not imperative but on the off chance you lose your dog while in Switzerland, if the dog is chipped or tagged in some way this agency is the go to agency for lost/found dogs.

Even though you live in France if you plan on taking your dog into Swiss territory I would recommend registering with Anis. You can do it online, it takes all of 5 minutes and it is FREE. It will save you some heartache should you lose your dog, as vets or animal pounds wont necessarily search for you in France unless you make it easy for them.

Hope this helps,

BCRover

Thank you both for this great advice and info!  I will definitely ensure I have the correct registration/pet passports, especially if/when we cross the border.

I am moving across to FR/CH next month - just finalising export docs for the animals now (already microchipped, and rabies tests done etc).  I now that finding housing that allows multiple animals is going to be challenging, which is why I am looking at towns/villages in FR, rather than just Geneva.  If you know of or hear of any houses coming available that might be suitable, please do let me know.

Thanks again
