Domestic Workers- How do you manage your domestic worker?

Hello,

I am currently interning at the International Labour Organization in Geneva and my assingment is to figure out what practices employers and domestic workers are using to negotiate their working time hours.

How do you set what time she has to start work or go to sleep (live in domestic workers)?

When do you give her breaks? How did you reach that agreement?

Do you create a schedule ( a time table) ?

If you need her to work during her rest periods or day off, how do you compensate her?

Please help by sharing your expereince, an idea, a comment..

Thank you

First you dont speficy the country your asking about. Rules in Switzerland is not the same in Saudi Arabia. Where many domestic workers are virtual slaves/sexually abused/Raped and it totally ignored by the world. Human rights in KSA is only for Saudi, all others are there to serve them.

practices employers and domestic workers are using?please your question is so broad and open ended, its not a good format or is unorganized your questions.

For Switerland: Domestic workers are still covered under Swiss employment laws, so if you employe one, make sure they have legal right / permit to work in Switzerland.

The for hours and other conditions, its all different but must not break employment laws, or then the employer is held liable for all sanctions, which can be very severe. That includes anyone that is illegal paid, your still responsible for the laws and rights of the domestic employee.

Dispite the Swiss laws, most domestic workers that are illegal will not complain, because its stil better conditions than heading home where there is no work or they are indebted due to them trying to work abroad to help there families. So I think alot of your questioins are so arbitrary considering what would the 'Domestic workers' like and hope for, versus what they are willing to accept? Certainly they would prefer Swiss Hours, swiss Breaks, Swiss time schedule, Swiss legal agreement, Swiss benefits, Swiss compensation.

Let all not be naive, because there are 10,000 domestic workers in geneva taking care of peoples homes and children all over Geneva, and most are Illegal working and are not 'really protected'. Many are afraid and if they get caught, they get deported. Is this right or would it be best that they are protected, asked who employed them and EXPLOITED /Benefited from THEM and did not obey Swiss / European Standards or laws?

Giving a miniscule salary, no health benefits, no medical, nothing.

So easy to look the otherway. So many rich and polititians all over the world have domestic help but they dont ensure proper rights and treatment. That includes the most industrialized countries including England, United States, Switzerland. They might do token enforecements and face painting but really nothing will ever be done. As long as they have cheep help that feeds them, cleans for them, takes care of there children.

Hey

Thanks for the question. I am personally studying female domestic workers, but if you have anything to say about male domestic workers then that is also welcomed.

Hi

I didnt specify a country because that is irrelevant. I am looking at 'practices employers and domestic workers use' when it comes to working time (ie. what timet to start work, when to take breaks, when to finish, when to work overtime).

How do they record their working time? Do they fill out a time sheet?

So if you can please stick to answering the questions i have asked then that would be great.

Thank you

Hi thank you for your reply. it was actually very helpful, because i think paying overtime on a per hour basis is a good idea.
