Efficiency of development aid

Hi to everyone,

I am finishing my final thesis about Efficiency of development aid in Africa (mainly in failed countries). I am looking for information connected with political situation in the country - how it affects foreign aid and so on.

Please do you have some tips, where to look for these type of infomration? I have already a lot of different studies, articles and books, but still I am looking for something more.

Thank you a lot and have a great day.

Tereza

Sounds like a worthwhile, controversial, and highly emotional subject (especially among development circles here in Geneva).  I would be more than happy to help point in possible directions for information.  But if you are "looking for something more", it would help if you might described more specifically what work and material you have covered so far, and what approaches you might be interested in?

For example:  are you interested in statistical measures of national "political stability" to compare with levels of development aid (something like an econometric study)?  Or are you interested in factors affecting the "efficiency" of aid (including perceived or actual stability)?  Or are you interested in exploring different conceptual forms of "aid" in varying political situations (for example, subsidies for infrastructure projects vs. social entrepeneurial micro-lending?

In any case, good luck with your work!

Hi, thank you a lot for your answer. Yes you are right it is quite emotional subject and I know that on this site I can find many people with many different opinions. But it helps me a lot, as well when I read different articles - like Easterly x Sachs and so on..

I am looking for different type of information - statistics (but these where it is possible to find datas about poverty - long term, development assistance - I am focused mainly on oficial developmen aid.. something where it is possible to see some effect of aid.. but I know it is qutie hard).

Another - some examples, where you can see, that aid helped or on other hand - increased corruption.

To see what influence has aid on government - it is said, that sometimes development aid play the role what government should play (when there is some problem development agencies try to solve instead of officers...

There is so many things around, these are at least some of them, what I would like to mention.

Thank you once more

Hi Tereza - I think the libraries might help you a lot, especially the Uni libraries. Good luck.

Tereza, perhaps you might find exploring the following cases (there should be quite a bit of material on the web) might be helpful:

Rawanda:  high levels of continuing development aid under a strict but stable political leadership which has been accused of violating human rights.

Kenya:  high levels of continuing development in a more unstable political setting but with strong institutional leadership in select organizations like the Kenya Red Cross.

Global Fund:  A Large NGO which halted aid in several countries due to concerns about accountability and corruption.

Hope this helps and good luck!

Though the data may only be used on an occasional and irregular basis.

Hi Rena,

thank you a lot, I will look on this website.

I study in Czech Republic - Politics, African studies, but because I am interested in development aid, I try to combine it little bit.
