Electric heating for a house in Geneva

Hi

We are looking to move into a house which uses electric heating in the winter. After not getting a straight answer from the realtor about the average cost to heat the house during the winter months, she finally replied that it would be in the range of 300-400 per month (this is a 3 story house, 5.5 pieces with basement).  Is this reasonable? Can anyone who has lived in a large house with electric heating provide any advise?

Thanks in advance, much appreciated!

Hello Hee Y,

How about trying to contact the Electricity company of Geneva : "Services Industriels de Genève" (SIG).  They certainly have the records for electricity consumption of the house. Let's hope that they can disclose the information to a potential new tenant.

Hello Hee

Your infos are quite limimited with details as the realtor must disclose such information and I advise you look after data like:

- how old is the house ?,

-should the electric panel have ever been replaced or not since house was built?,

-is the electric meter equiped with a double reading fixture which allows for a reduced tariff?

"Nomades" has indicated a lead as SIG (in Geneva canton) or Romande Energie (in Vaud canton) can provide also average infos for an individual or semi-detached house of a given age and help you knw roughly the expenses on your electricity Heating budget.

Last, you can also evaluate the purchase of four small ceramic heater units operating on electricity as they give excellent heat results compared to electricity consumption; you can then move them around the rooms in the house

As Milord indicates, this depends on many paramerters, mainly how well insulated the  house is, which mainly depends on the age. E.g. I live in a new house (2009) with electric heating. I cannot remember how much the heating costs, mainly because it's not enough to worry about.
