Hi all. We've been having a tussle with Romande Energy as their latest bill (the annual one they send once they have read the meter) is crazy - CHF.1,100, which works out that we pay around 300 francs a month (for a tiny house around 70 sq.m). I've spoken to friends who live in Geneva who say they pay much less. Do you know if electricity is much cheaper in Geneva than Vaud, and do you think we are paying too much?

How much energy do you use?
There's a calculator on the energie-romande website.
My rough guess would be that you use something around 10000kWh of electricity per year. Is that right?
I'm not an expert on this, but depending on what you do with the electricity and the way the house is heated and insulated, this _might_ be a little bit much.
If in doubt, ask a real expert ;-)

Electricity companies seem to make an "estimate" and then correct it later. For example I pay a bill they send, then a few months later I get another letter saying that they've charged me too much and I end up with credit. As a result subsequent bills are just taken off from my credit.
My yearly bill, although in Zurich, is nowhere near as much as 1100CHF / year in any case.

You got it wrong. Her bill is 300x12 = 3600 CHF per year.
Of course, mine is lower, too - but I only have a flat.
Still, I'd expect the bill to be a bit lower, even for a house (unless they're growing pot in the basement or having a 50 inch plasma tv run for 16h a day....)

I just received our electricity bill for the period September to September. Our annual spend came in at CHF 1750 (CHF 146 per month). This seems an enormous bill compared tot he UK, but we have hot water on demand which never seems to run out and this included our heating bill (I think) which we have no control over.
How much does everyone else pay?
We live in Geneva, 2 bedroom apartment, at work all day, 2 adults

If you have electric heating which is temeprature regulated...ie goes on when the tem drops below a certain level...and if you have hot water on demand...and if you use washing machines, and dishwashers and dryers during the day, and your electric bulbs are not energy savers then UNFORTUNATELY your bill is about spot on.
For a 70 to 100 m2 house this is about average.
I had a 200m2 house with underfloor heating, hot water on demand, electric lights and TV on alot, etc etc...the bill ......CHF 707 per month
Now im in a smaller appartment, with energy saving bulbs, water is shared and part i belive is solar heated... etc etc..the bill would be somewhere in the region of CHF 50 pm max.... maybe even lower.
Energie Romand can give you a consultation and advise you accordingly...but for a house...it seems right.

From all your posts and what I have read on the internet we must have electric heating and hot water. This would explain the high bill.
Our apartment is 90m2, we use a washing machine about 4 times per week, dishwasher 3 times a week, and tumble drier 2 times per week in winter
I have to confess that we leave some items on standby as it is difficult to access the plugs.
Ahh well, at least we don't have big bills from British Gas anymore (UK). I will just be a bit more careful how much hot water I use and add it to the cost of living in Switzerland.
