English speaking orthodontist in Barcelona 1/3 of the cost of treatment here

I thought I would share that I recently was quoted CHf 6'300 at a dental clinic in Morges for whitening of my teeth (traditional method with bleach) and two new veneers on my front top-middle teeth.

I sometimes visit Barcelona on business and thought I would search "English speaking Orthodotist" and get a quote.

I found a clinic that caught my attention as they make all their prosthetics in-house, which made me encouraged it must be a pretty well equipped place.

I got a quote and it was only 1,700 Euros including a cleaning and laser-whitening (had never heard of that!) so last week I went down for it.

Facility was gorgeous- private clinic in a mansion in the Hospital district. Fluent English receptionist and hygienist and dentist.

I had the cleaning and whitening which was fantastic and all done in a 90 minute session (no nasty chemicals and very natural colour).

The dentist suggested before the veneers I could consider upper and lower braces. I am age 42 and should have had this as a kid but British dentists shyed away for some reason when my mother asked. Anyway, he said he could get a great result in 5-8 months (not the 2 years I presumed and had previously put me off). I had also been quoted in Switzerland over CHf 20'000 for this.

For the best quality white "sapphire" (therefore discreet) braces that apparently do not discolour, it will be 3,900 Euros for the orthodontics plus around 400 Euros per tooth for the ceramic veneers, of which I may need two to replace the existing ones or possibly four for an even better "smile"!

Anyway all in worst case 5,500 Euros.  But possible 4,700 Euros.

As EasyJet has a breakfast-flight that lands at 8.10am most days, it is highly feasible even if I am not needing to be there (but some of the time I can combine with business), to go down and back in a day and flights are cheap, so assuming say maximum 8 flights- I will be massively in pocket and the work so far has been absolutely impeccable. The dentist practises in Paris 2 days a week (but charges double there) and also in Bilbao.

Anyway, I'll get the braces fitted on Monday and so if anyone is interested for feedback after that has been done, feel free to get in touch.

The schedule is about 90 minutes for the fitting then once every 4-5 weeks a 15 minute adjustment.

If you just have cosmetic work, he can apparently do a huge amount without braces, and this needs two appointments- one to take impressions and one for fitting. So if that is all you need it is an even bigger cost saving over local services.

Not trying to take business away from local clinics but it's a global market place and why not, especially if the work is every bit as good as you can get here (which so far I definitely believe but will really know after Monday).

Intriguing. Keep us posted. I'm curious about the 8 month timeline. What's the cost of the monthly adjustments?

Me too- I was surprised it could be that short but I really don't get the impression this is anything but a top notch place. maybe it is specific to my teeth and it varies and can be the longer timeframe in other cases or maybe it is an improved technique. I will ask on MOnday and find out.

The adjustments are included in the price. The bill was for the full work.

If I discover otherwise on Monday will let you know but I am 99% sure that price is "all in".

Cheers!

Went last week for the upper brace fitting- all excellent and very professional. Go back in 3 weeks to have the upper adjusted and lower fitted.

The upper is very good and not too visible although I feel a bit of a dork!

Am highly optimistic this will have been a worthwhile and cost effective exercise.

It crossed my mind that anyone needing orthodontics could probably save a lot over Swiss prices by getting the brace fitted there and just having the adjustments done locally which surely any orthodontist could do. The Swiss dentists charge by the minute and adjustments I am told are only 10-15 minutes so could work out way elss than having the brace itself fitted locally.

Anyway- any problems I will rpeort back and if anyone wants the dentist's details let me know. I also had a full medical for a running license while I was down there with a British doctor- and that was only 80 Euros.....
