We are a family with teenagers spending our first year in Switzerland and hope to go fo a week skiing around new year. Where do we go? How do we find a place to stay? We are not superexperienced, but not total beginners either- All ideas most welcome

Try Les Houches in Chamonix. It's got a nice selection of slopes of varying difficulty and the slopes are usually kept in decent condition. It's only about an hour's ride from Geneva.

I would reccomend Morzine.
there is a list of accom both catered and self catered here:

Try Tripadvisor.com also for reviews.
The ski area is one of the biggest in the world and unlike Chamonix doesn't require a car/ bus to get between the different areas. The skiing is very varied but tends to be pretty easy. Very few Blacks. It's a reasonable sized place so there is a lot of restaurants/ nightlife.
You could also try Chatel which is part of the same ski area, Portes Du Soleil. It has very easy slopes and is more chalet dominated.

Ski the Quatre Vallee without Verbier prices.
Chalet rental is also fairly priced.

Please check out Chalet Martin on the website. It would be ideal!
www.season-rentals.com The site is for weekly and weekend rentals too!
Best wishes,
John

Avoid Verbier/chamonix prices, good alternatives are Morzine, Avoriaz, Les Gets, Flaine, Quatre Vallee, etc.
A week at new year with a family is expensive, so choose wisely.
