Foreword: this post is in no way targeted at hayes or bucelawson so don't come hitting on me on that ground
I really find the late openly anti-Swiss and anti-Genevois tone of voice of these forums very disrespectful, even offensive and insulting
Seems nothing is good here, food is disgusting, goods are overpriced, customs are barbaric and locals are some sort of uncultured mountaineer producing cheese & chocolate
Guess what? I'm one of those "barbarians" that welcome you here and I hate it when my culture, country and fellow citizen get spat at by some parasite that somehow managed to land himself an expat assignment in Geneva.
You not asked to bend over backwards but you should show some consideration to those who welcome you here.
Remember that nobody invited you. You came on your own. If you don't like it here, you are warmly welcome to leave ASAP. It will hopefully make room to some more intellignent guests than you. It is really a sad thing that an entire wonderful community gets stigmatized by some rotten apples....
Those who know me know exactly what I mean. This post will surely be frozen or even deleted, but I am ready to re-post as many time as needed

i moved to geneva 2 years ago, and just adapted. course food is not as nice, but for christ sake, it`s not that difficult to get used to cheese and potatos =D
i`m over simplifying, but just to say I agree with swisskiss. moving abroad is an experience only rarely imposed, and those moving should be more eager to fit. this is the fun of it, at least for me.

I understand people are a bit homesick when they find how much geneva differs from their country/city of origin. But when this genuine feeling gets perverted by fear or ignorance into a sneering contempt for a city which has one of the highest standards of living in europe i just turn off.
read the wonderful story of the writer agota kristof and how she worked hard to make a life for herself in this country. she's an inspiration to all guests like us to knuckle down and make something out of our stay here.

I think SwissKiss's (SK) post was partially inspired by this thread, althogh SK clearly notes his post is not directed at any one person in particular. Rather, he's making a general point.
I fully understand SK's note, and agree with the comment about foreign folks having to adapt to their chosen new city. On the other hand, I don't see anything wrong with people not liking the food / service / prices somewhere, and posting something about it.
Just because someone lives in city X, does not mean that he has to love everything in city X, or that he can't comment on the things he does not like. As lonk as such opinions are expressed in a respectful consturctive style, I think it's not bad.
SK - what do you think buddy?

Right. I'm not sure I buy this guests business. The legal system and interfaces are set up for immigration. Immigration -- particularly in Geneva -- is essential. Geneva depends on people that aren't Swiss living here. As a resident you live here, yeah, but you also contribute in the same way that a citizen does. You pay in all the right places, and you earn the right *not* to just accept things the way they are. You don't just have to accept the framework the way it is and say everything is ace the way it is. That's not what being part of any society is about. You're people with opinions and you should fucking express them. You have the right to examine things, contrast with what you know, and to comment on that openly if you want.
You're going to compare the system to the system you know. It's the ONLY way you can assess it. How else can you even think about a society? How else can you think about anything that isn't mathematics or formal logic? It's your only benchmark.
I don't love Switzerland. I don't even like it that much. Don't get me wrong -- I've lived in three countries in my life and I don't like any of them that much either. In the coming months I'll move to a forth. I don't know which one it'll be or whether I'll particularly like it or not. The ones I have lived in have had their good points but yeah, everywhere has it's good points too. I don't think anyone is denying that Switzerland -- or even Geneva -- has good points. And this thread illustrates that perfectly well.
Isn't this like a confirmation bias? Whenever a group of expats are together, they're going to analyse where they are and talk about it with other people who are doing the same thing. The forum we're having this conversation is (what?) 89% not Swiss (11% Swiss, that's right?) and the people are going to talk about this stuff. But the bad stuff is *always* what sticks in your head. It's what narks you. In the same way that you never remember the good trips to the dentist but always the ones that hurt for 3 days. You never talk about the smooth flights but alway the ones when you think you're going to fall out of the sky. Of course the stuff that irritates you comes out more.... it's... you know, obvi.... of course it does. Mix in the expat community and you're going to hear this. It's not the society but the subsample you choose to interact with. That in itself has nothing to do with Switzerland and everything to do with people.
Sorry, I'm too drunk to read the thread. If someone has said that already then..., er, yeah, sorry for treading on your toes.
Come on Bedrock, let me have it.

SK-what do you think buddy?
I think nothing, I merely open my eyes and observe. No expat is required to love Switzerland or Geneva and quite frankly locals couldn't care less. But... one can't help noticing that it is not the Japanese, Indonesians, Kazakh, Russians,
Turks, Brazilian, Israeli or Moroccans that hate it here but only the
anglo-saxons... now what does that say about these folks?
@hayes, you alcoholic trash, why don't you buy yourself a life?

Sorry, I don't feel threatened as a Swiss when I read that food sucks and is overpriced here. In a more general way, I would find it very suspect if a foreigner was to say he/she loves everything about Switzerland. I don't want my potential friends to lick my butt, I want them to be honest. Look at Justdoit's post, it's adorable, but an idealistic view of our country.

oh so dear casuistik, those pesky locals are "tolerated" here, that's
what you mean? fancy that! and they should perhaps also refrain from
articulating their objection at being patronized no? let me guess, next thing you will accuse

How come it's openly OK to spit on Switzerland in the forum but
whenever someone stands up to defend it he/she is immediately
criticised by your kind... at any rate I have nothing to justify to you
and if you don' t like my stand you can look elsewhere
feel free not to like your country but don't disgust others from it

This is a clean, well preserved country. People are conscious of the fact that they have a long way to go in more than one area but they are trying hard to fit in.
I am not proud of all the Swiss have done historically. There is certainly a lot to criticize but you know what, in comparison with a lot of other cities, this is still a very good place to be!
I hope you get a chance to go live, not far, in one of the neighboring countries and have a bit of perspective about what this city has to offer. That WILL help you better understand and maybe be able to moderate your strong opinions.
And last but nor least, what exactly is it that you hate most about Switzerland? Express your opinion? Sure, go ahead, it's your right. Try and change things? You may suggest some very good ideas, I am sure.... But whatever you need to do or say, I suggest you do it with some tact and respect for the people who gave you the opportunity to live among them.

No wonder the male kind is responsible for wars, lol.
No country is perfect, but it's us who are responsible for making the things they are ( or at least I'd like to think so).
I'd say we're all lucky here anyways. Look at home many people die of starvation every day, not to mention wars, diseases etc. Maybe that will bring a perspective.

Well, you just did... but so poorly, we may agree you didn't.

Try to grab the concept of evolving (I know, this requires much from you) - it's what I want for my country: criticism helps... from everywhere.
In a more general way, you didn't understand my ad absurdum reasoning (who's surprised?). As I think you are perfectly entitled to criticize this site and some behaviors of our expats friends, you should - following the same logic - admit that they have the right to criticize Switzerland. If a poster goes too far, call him a whiner, but don't forfeit him the right to speak because he is an expat!

The main argument & counter-arguments are clear, and I'll try to summarize them in my over-simplified way:
- some folks feel there are too many direct attacks on CH in the forums.
- some other folks feel these are not attacks, but constructive criticism.
- on the new forum system, it is possible to 'Thank Yourself' for a good post.
To avoid the discussion going further into personal attacks, we'll close this thread now (if I can figuere out how to do it on this new forum system).

looking for, what your expectations are, etc.
There are plenty of things in
Switzerland and Geneva that I'm happy, even thrilled, about. There are plenty of things which
frustrate me or give me pause.
But, I don't spend my time berating
them. As the brain said in Breakfast Club "It is what it is". You just gotta roll with it, baby. Adjust
or you'll make yourself miserable and rain on everyone's

I live in Zurich and have often come across the "anti-swiss venom" and I think that is a shame
Switzerland is my 6th country outside India that I have been living in..and guess what? I have been "stuck" here for the past 5 year! and I absolutely love it...
Coming back to the "anti swiss" thing, I do find it disturbing when I meet some grumpy fat ass ugly **** who complains about almost everything...
There is just one thing I tell these people..
"If you don't like it here, just pack your bags and leave. If you like it here, just shut your mouth and stay"
My opinion about Switzerland in general...
- Switzerland is beautiful, clean, neat, safe and many more things that you can imagine about.
- People complain that it is expensive...It is indeed expensive if you are a tourist..but if you live here and have a "Swiss" salary, it is NOT! You make more money than anywhere else in the world, and you pay less taxes...at the end of day, you save more money..
- Things are expensive, but not everything..VAT is just 7.6%. So if you go to a branded shop in Zurich and elsewhere in EU , rest of EU is more expensive.
- You pay more for the quality of life and the fantastic infrastructure that you have in Switzerland! I have lived in NYC and London and these cities are bloody expensive to live in these cities..You don't need a car in Switzerland, but in cities like NYC and London you CANNOT do without a car.
The list can go on and on and on..
- You are right in the middle of Europe..Travelling becomes easy.
- Social system is really good here..If you work for 1 year and get fired after that, you get unemployment money for the next 18 months...where else do you get this benefit?
- Its a perfect country for both summer and winter sports...Summer here is awesome with some fantastic parades and many festivals. You have the lake in the middle of the city in almost every city. Slopes are easily accesible within a timeframe of 1 hour or more.
- Coming to Swiss people, I have had the best experience with Swiss people..I have many stories to tell..(contact me if you want to know more). They take time to open up (I guess part of their culture) but once they do, they are your friends for life...
There are endless things that you could talk about...but I guess the above points are sufficient!
Have a nice day you all...
cheers,
Ehsaan

Like most expats, I got my job here on merit( I actually work for a swiss company), I pay a lot of tax, I am a light user of services, I contribute considerably to the local economy. So I am not lucky, or a parasite, and neither was there a phalanx of hospitable swiss people welcoming me at the airport when I arrived.
We are all lucky to live in a functioning democracy, where we all have the freedom of speech, part of which is the freedom to criticise. Criticism is not always a negative thing; it actually leads to improvement.
So I reckon some people on here need to lighten up a bit, and not take the burden of nationhood on their shoulders....

I’m afraid I’ve only come across this as it seems to have reached the hearts and flowers stages so I
apologise for lowering the tone.
Dear Swisskiss,
Congratulations for displaying that most characteristic of all swiss traits (at least to us unwelcome foreigners)
that of intolerance. You know the stuff; the thing that has my neighbour call the police to stop me building a wendy house on a Sunday;
that stops me hanging my washing outside, that stops people watching TV in apartment buildings above volume level 1 after 10pm…
If ever there was a country that wanted to hammer the round peg into the square hole it is this it.
Its ironic that a nation that prides itself on the rule of law earns so much of its revenues helping people break their own countries’ laws by tax avoidance.
You seem to credit people with a lot more free will than they have. My firm relocated here so I had no choice but to
Come and I know most other expats I know faced the same situation. Check the alarmingly professionally photographed Mr Lawson’s post for more detail.
You could, of course, always try your own remedy… that if you don’t like something you leave. I’m sure you’d be missed on glocals, but it seems to cause you so much angst that perhaps it would be best??
I’m afraid there’ll be more posts criticising Switzerland and Geneva (not least because a post eulogising the railways or health system are dull beyond words).
I’ve only been here a few months and so far the puts have outweighed the takes like most of my collegues. But that doesn’t change that most of our swiss related chat in the office is bitching…
Plus ca change

So to SK's point, those who hate it so much, then Sayonara baby!! Switzerland does not need/want you.
But let's sit back and think for a second. Is it possible that some Swiss confuse "venom" with feedback or constructive criticism? I think we all agree no country or people of that country are without flaws, and Switzerland is no different. However, I think being able to express one's opinion, even negatively, should not be taken offensively. Rather, when hearing some things take a minute to consider the source and situation.
I have lived in several countries in Asia and now Europe (the unusual American), and I must say in each country I found something I did not care for. However, I also found a lot of things I loved so it balanced out. But if those around me fixed only on my negative comments and not the raving compliments I had as well, there would have been no positive relationships gained.
So to this, I think we should challenge ourselves a bit. To my fellow expats, for everything you find that does not suit you, find 1 or more things that counters it and makes it manageable. And to the Swiss, the next time you hear a negative comment from an expat, instead of jumping to the defense, engage that person in dialogue to better understand where they are coming from. It might be a bad day at work, an argument with a spouse or partner, lack of intimacy for several years boiling over......... many things.
Communication is the key, my friends! Let's talk with each other and not at each other. Kill them with kind words and kindness in general, I say. If that does not work, then just kill them. Kidding of course, but you get my point.

Oh yes..
Shell we try to ask UK's about money from India and other GB former colon.?
and all other stuff happens in UK?
you should better learn from Swiss trying to protect their own way of life (yes yes, volume level 1 is also fight) and not giving away your own country like UK, France and Germany. All your points are absolute bull... since there is only point - it is SWISS and if you want to live here RESPECT will be the answer for all "-" and "+" of this country.
try to relocate with your firm to Kuwait for example... feel the diff.

Have a nice day you all...
cheers,
Ehsaan

I don't think the thread should be closed either unless it gets really nasty though it seems to have calmed down and given way to reason and diplomacy which is always good.
I love the "can't we all just get along" image! very cute.

I think you doth protest too much.
I come from Ireland and the only thing we help people do is have a hangover and for that I apologise.
Just because other countries might take money from other places doesn't make it right does it? Check the front page of your paper; I dodn't notice any other country getting sued for it.....
I will leave to others cleverer and wittier than myseld to take apart your Switzerland is better off without foreigners rant. Haven't you heard of multiculturalism?? Or do you think its a necessary evil to ensure you can get your car/ house cleaned cheaply?

TOPS:
1. The location (sailing in the summer, skiing in the winter, mediteran flair)
2. The income (not so many countries in the world where you earn more money)
3. The security (I never felt so safe then in Switzerland)
4. The "swiss" system (health system, pension system is excellent)
5. The international flair of Geneva, even if it is a "small city", it's international but still totally charming
FLOPS:
1. Try to get a beer at the gas station
2. Try to get food at the gas station after 10PM or try to buy your food after 8PM at migros, coop at the day not Thursday ... and you don't want to drive to the airport
3. Try to get a place for your boat at the lac lehman without sleeping with the woman who is responsable to decide if you get a place...and even then you don't get it %ç&%
4. Try to buy a appartment instead of renting without winning in who is beeing a millionaire ... and of course you only want 40 square meters
5. Try to get the train when you are 5 seconds to late at the station
I just want to line out, that there are advantages which are really counters compare to little daily thinks to deal with, if you want to live here... this is in every coutry the same and represence a interracial, multilingual socity.

Maybe, I don't get it...but the original thread also say "anti-swiss" so being a responsible resident of Switzerland, I had to add my 2 cents as well...
Looks like you were certainly targeted..

the banks ... British banks are worse .. even something basic like transferring money is 5 times as expensive if done from the UK ! Over-inflated accommodation prices ? Well it's one of the main cities - have you tried living in London ? a fairly middle-class area means you pay about 2500 to 3000 francs a month minimum for a 2-bedroom flat .., with rooms much smaller than in Switz .. 3 bedroom flat in a safe area like Kensington (London) ... 5 to 6000 francs a month minimum !
I agree with motorways being better in the UK than Switzerland and people being better drivers in terms of sticking to rules .. but that's outside London ...As for trains ... I won't even compare !!! I pay less on a Swiss flight to Zurich from London than I do on a peak train ticket to Bedford or Luton (about 40 minutes train ticket !!!).
I have noticed that most people winging and complaining are British ...if you don't like it ..... as I said flights back are cheaper than train tickets in the UK, so you're most welcome !
Chill out .. relax ..and try to look at the great things .. as Ehsaan pointed out .. loads of good things ... Even in England, we've got some good things but there are also bad things .. if you want to criticise something, you'll find it ... the half-full, half-empty glass phenomenon ? No hang on a minute ... glass ?!!! WHAT GLASS I don't see ANY GLASS !! is what some people's attitude seems to be .. relax :):) Enjoy life .. and you've been here for 10 years tax_exile so can't be bad !!!
Try and get to know the Swiss a bit more .. they're hard to get to know but once they know you well .. they are great friends .. friends for life as I found out from the friends I have had here for donkey's years .. it just takes them time to know you well...and hey I know a good country from a bad country - lived in 6 countries for a few years in each, not counting countries I stayed in for shorter periods - enjoy one of the most beautiful and liveable countries in the world ...Switzerland !
the banks ...

Some people are comparing Switzerland to the UK, yes, but that wasn't by any means the point. They just decided to write about that because they didn't understand. Or maybe just wanted to write something. That's fine; it's not their fault. Of course, if you had read and understood, you wouldn't need to ask. So you know. Knock-for-knock on this one, I'd say.

You pay tax at source in MOST of the countries even though you are a citizen...
In Switzerland they deduct tax at source for a number of reasons...
and an ID like TAX_EXILE is certainly one of the reasons ;-) LOL
In Switzerland, if you have a Permit "C" you don't pay taxes at source!

Its more of a discussion than argument...
I guess we all have the right to put our point forward...right?

Actually this thread was started (in my understanding) to point out the
good things and to STOP complaining about the things people MISS in
comparison with their previous cities/countries/villages!
Its a very simple theory that some people make it so complex!
This is what we offer....TAKE IT OR LEAVE IT...
If you don't like it here, just pack your bags and leave!!!
If you like to live here, just live with the available resources and stop complaining!!!
We all have a choice to live or leave!!

This is such a BIG misunderstanding...
I agree with your LOVE and PEACE idea...I also believe in the same...
What I mean by BUT, if someone attacks me, I would certainly defend myself!!
is nothing to do with you or me...
It just means that when people come up with some ir-rational ideas, people reply to that and it becomes and argument/discussion...
This is what I mean...if somebody attacks you (verbally), you will obviously give it back!
clear? nothing against you my dear!
Cheers

Hell yeah! Or in this case, if someone says something that's simply wrong, it's better to point that out.
What I'd consider bad form is to blunder into a 100 post thread you haven't even contributed to and tell people to stop it.

Looking for examples on this thread where people have really lost their cool... they're pretty hard to find. The only real glaring example is the topic starter on the first page.
Again, I just think it's quite rude to drop into a well-evolved thread and tell people to stop their discussion because you personally don't like it.

In my opinion, there is no point discussing cuisine, politics, housing, immigration laws, tax laws, job market protection,... and all this in a thread titled 'Fed up with anti-Swiss venom', which was started with a frustrated and jumpy patriotic rant - albeit well founded. We understand that 'we can stay or leave', thank you very much. As I was born into a country, where there was no such choice at the time, so I fully appreciate its meaning.
The reason of our (thank you, Kaki) pacifist posts is that there is no SOLUTION to the problem as stated in the starting post. People are people and so they sometimes get emotional and denounce (hereby offending) others by association. At the same time it is doing no good to anybody to keep this thread alive with subjects (see on top), which are so tangential to the initial point of offended patriotism.
If someone, for example, is frustrated (I know several) with the housing situation in Geneva, they should know better than to vent it in a thread on 'anti-Swiss venom'. Does it solve their housing problem? No. They may find a temporary relief in an outburst of complaints, but aside from this selfish point of view it does no good. Much more damage, in my opinion, than if they conscientiously started another thread titled something to the point like 'How hugely frustrated with Geneva housing situation I am'. This is a hint, you guys...
I am not very happy myself, of course, because our pacifist posts are bringing the thread up the queue at the front page just as well as the confronting ones. The reason I read this thread is that its starting post was such an explosive mixture of reason, frustration and would-be retaliation... I caught it early on Friday and until today I resisted to post here - aware that every time the thread gets pulled up the queue at the home page, somebody will not resist the urge to post as well. I will not post here after this lengthy one (I hope to make some people happy by that :-)) as well as myself) and I invite everyone, who wishes to communicate with me on this subject, to write to me via glocals mail.
P.S. By the way, please DON'T thank me for this useful post, however useful you might find it! I insist that it is NOT useful, just like most in this thread. ;-)))

All countries have problems and we have to live with that...
Kaki & Danny,
I agree with your idea about LOVE & PEACE, but at the same time when someone is "lost" or has a wrong/bad opinion, then he/she has to be "enlightened" as well...
On the other hand, Hayes has a different humour which some people take it as rude, arrogant, unfriendly and nasty!
I had to contribute and say what I had to say...I did it...
And now saying Sayonara to this post!!
Cheers

OK, if you don't want thanks for the content of the post, then fine, but thank you for taking the time to write it and dedicating some brain-power to it. Is that OK? ;)
Personally I'd agree in this case that the thread didn't gain much when the focus shifted. Picking out the relevant arguments from the irrelevant was quite frustrating, even during the first couple of hours of the thread. Furthermore, the thread will be remembered as a CH vs. elsewhere fiasco (which some people may well prefer...) rather than what it really was.
The meat of the original point was pretty much all eaten up when Casuistik took apart a Swisskiss post on the first page... but it's quite difficult with forums, isn't it: when you have to assess every post equally. People seemed to see it instantly as a place to compare CH to elsewhere (UK mostly, by shear numbers...) but that was just a mistake. You can't really hold it against people that the thread shifted in that direction when the same error was made by quite a few people so early on.
Largely I agree that it's not going to change anything. But I disagree with the assertion that it's meaningless to discuss it because of that. You can change the way other people think and they can do the same to you. I think there is a hell of a lot of value in that. Now this thread may not be a shining example -- it isn't -- but in essence I think it's completely fine.
