Also, what is the process for registering with them.
In the UK once you have registered with a doctor you are able to book appointments, or attend open surgeries for any type of ailment. Is it the same here?
Been in some pain for a while & think it's coming from my appendix.
Anyway, any help much appreciated.

Good luck with the pain - hope it turns out to be nothing serious.
The process for seeing a GP:
Just book an appointment, and go see him/her. The health insurance covers your visits costs (with what ever restrictions your insurance has), which usually run into around CHF 100 / visits.
To see a specialist:
2 options:
- Get your GP to send you to see one. This is the safest way to ensure you see a good doctor, and that the insurance covers it.
- Just book directly with the specialist. Some specialists will ask you to first go via your GP, some won't. The insurance will usually cover you specialist costs even if your GP didn't send you to one, unless it's special cases (which I am not too familiar with).
If you have a real emergency:
Just walk into into any ER. Again, in most cases, the insurance will cover you.
Good luck, and hope you never need any of the above advice!

Once you start seeing 1 GP, you can also see others. It's not that you're tied to just 1.

Hi Mark,
I have a list of English speaking doctors in Geneva. Send me your email address and I can scan it to you. I hate to disagree with Nir but the insurance only pays what exceeds your franchise. The minimum franchise is 500 francs/year (I don't know what you have, could be even more) so if it's only check investigations etc then it's only a few hundred francs and it's not covered by insurance. If you do surgery or other treatment that costs more than 500 francs (or whatever is your franchise) then yeah it's covered by insurance.

However, most receptionists don't speak english, so you will need to speak enough French to make your appointment.

There are also various walk-in clinics here where you dont have to have an appointment at all, but can walk in and wait for the next available doctor. There is one of those in Eaux Vives in rue de Nant, just around the corner from the Mairie.

Hello,
Just in case you didnt find a doctor you liked (and hope the pain cleaered up), my doctor has been a godsend since I arrived from the UK and I would recommend him to anyone. Not only does he speak good English, he will also help you with, what seems like at first, the complicated Swiss Medical system that is normally hampered with unecessary paperwork and systems that are illogical!, he will guide you on this and explain everything with patience and detail. And he will also give medical advice over the phone.
His name is Dr. Olivier Wenger,
1,Ancienne Route 77, 1218 Grand Saconnex.
tel: 022 798 8100.
If you use him, tell him that I recommended you (my full name is Siobhan Cullen).
All the best, :D
Siobhan.

Thanks again for all the messages! :) In the end I saw a doctor at the Centre medical du Leman. Very friendly, helpful, and no problems to get appointment. Things appear to be ok, but I'm booked in for a few tests & investigations.
If anyone else is reading this & looking I recommend the sugery.

Nookes, I just saw your comment about an english speaking soctor in Geneva. I have been trying to contact Dr. Caulfield. We are cousins. We had been in touch, but I'm afraid she has changed her email address.
Could you please send me her phone nbr, and if you have it, an email address.
Thank you very much

I suggest using google to find your cousin’s address, tel. no. and email. Almost every doctor practising in CH can be found that way.
