First time in Italy. Where to go? What to see?

In a couple of months my friend from the US is coming to Italy for the first time in her life. I would be grateful to have your recommendations. Thank you in advance!

Hello Gulchatay,

It depends on your time and preferences!. Are you already there?!

Rome is a huge city and I think you should spend at least 3 days (super fast tour)

Venice, Florence, can be reached easier in a couple of days (except you are an art/museum-lover, in that case you will spend those days just visiting museums)

The south is fantastic. It isn't monumental at all, but it's really wonderful...La puglia!, Calabria, Sicily.

And if you already know something of Italy, and you prefer to discover other little spaces, I suggest you Alba (in Piemonte Region), San Gimminiano (in Toscana), Mattera (in Campania),  Scilla (in Calabria), ....there are too many places, it depends on your priorities. If you want to discuss it let me know!

Thank you so much for the wealth of info, Lorena! My friend is coming the first week of July for 10-12 days. It would be great to show the warmth of Italians and something unique to impress her (she is from New York). I do not think we will be able to see everything, but i am sure she will be back after that trip! What would be your suggestions?

Thank you as well, Fabio! I see you were in New York. From your perspective what would you recommend to see my friend who arrives to Milan in first week of July for 10-12 days? I also would like to show her warmth and hospitality of Italians

Thank you, Fabio! I was in Florence in 2013 and 4 days were not enough to see everything. So would love to visit this breathtaking city again!

Good morning!

If you are begining travelling in Milano, perhaps, it will be easier to choose the north-east region and visit, Bergamo, or drink the famous liquor in Saronno going to the Lake of Como, Verona, Padova, Venice ( I would prefer  to visit Venice in another season, but it is also a must!)....But this is just another option. That means, you will have deciced to drive and cover a geografical area.

Fabio has made very good suggestions in Toscana, so Gulchatay, as you can see, it depends on the kind of travel you are thinking about. 2 weeks is time enough to do very different things, from staying just in one Region, to visiting only the most important ("wellknown") things of each town; it depends on your preferences. I hate the word "important", perhaps beacuse I love Italy too much!

At this point, the best suggestion I can give you is to look for around the cultural/folcloric events and parties that are organised in that period. Summer time in Italy, as in Spain, is plenty of towns fiestas that can make your experience a lot more enjoyable. For exampe, I agree that Siena is a must, but much better if you can visit it when they celebrate the famous "Palio di Siena".

Ex.: http://www.folclore.it/It/Eventi/italia/feste-popolari/Luglio/

I have check and "La festa del Palio di Siena" this year is supposed to be held in July!. This sorts of links could be another useful tool to help you taking a decision. But don't forget to check dates with official websites ok?!!!

If you don't drive, think about www.italotreno.it . It can't offer you so many railways routes as Trenitalia does, but, it covers the principal cities in less time and cheaper (if you buy in advance).

Let's check your decisión at the end, if you want to discuss it!.

Enjoy!
