Fixed Internet connection - what are the options? Experiences?

Hi,

So finally due to negative comments I decided to get a fixed internet connection.

I don't need a fixed phone line, skype and mobile phone works well for me, neither do I have/use TV and my prepaid mobile phone works fine for me.

With Swisscom/Sunrise/Orange I always have to pay 25.25 chf for the fixed phone, is there any other option to get internet in Switzerland?

Someone mentioned Cablecom, how is the service of the company? I speak German, so no need ofr English customer service...

Does anyone have experiences (good and bad) with Swisscom, Sunrise, Orange and/or Cablecom?

(Living without Internet sucks a bit ;) although hot chocolate in one of the cafes with free wifi is not too bad, it's not an option to go for for a longer time ;) )

Any advice is warmly welcome!

From the limited research I did, you need to have a fixed line in order to get a fixed internet connection.

Don't know about cablecom.

Thanks Nir!

That's my conclusion too, I wonder if there is any way to circumwent that, e.g. internet via cable...

Hope there are glocals around with some experiences on this topic!

Hello,

I was in your same situation, I wanted an internet connection but I had no interest in the fix phone or even less in paying a fee to Swisscom for a service I would have never used.

So I went for the internet cable connection and I'm really satisfied about the choice.

Unfortunately cable companies here change from town to town (I live close to Lausanne, under the TVTservices coverage) so I cannot provide any feedback on Cablecom itself.

But about the type of service, basically what you get is an internet connection indipendent from the phone line, so you are free not to have any contract with Swisscom.

What I have in my apartment is a wall socket with three "holes" (don't know how to call them sorry), one is for cable tv, one is for digital radio and one is for internet. Of course you should be free to subscribe only to what you need, not necessarily to all of the three.

Check if you have this socket already in your apartment (I had it in mine, it should be looking something like that), if you don't have it what you should do is going to the Cablecom website and see whether your area is covered with their service or not.

Hope this can help :)

Ilaria

Hi all,

I am in the same situation (even worse, because my building is too old to have the installation needed for cable), but I discovered that swisscom offers a package where you can link your internet connection with your mobile phone instead of fixed line. The bad part is you need to get or have a mobile phone contract with them, but if you don't mind that and you cannot get cable its the only option.

I have cable TV with NAXOO and they offer internet service. I don't know how good it is.

For internet I have Orange Live box. It took 30 days to have it activated and the service is ok... However, had I known Naxoo existed I would have done a bundle deal with them as they were very fast and reasonably priced; and I would have been able to skip the swisscom landline.

Ilaria, I'll check for that socket first thing I do tonight, I did check on cablecoms homepage, and my area is covered. If I don't have a three-holed socket, would they come and exchange it then?

Xaviero, good to know Naxoo worked fine and fast for the TV, I hope they provide the same service for Internet, seems like the option to go for, if I have the right socket it is...

Thanks Jose, I didn't know about that option, although I find Swisscoms mobile rates quite expensive and in the end prepaid + unused fixed telephone line would be almost the same price.

Thank you all for the useful comments!

Yes,

when the TVTservices guy came for the installation he took all his stuff with him to change my socket but then he saw that it was there already, so he just plugged the cable in and gave me the modem, and that was it.

I don't know about Cablecom, but I don't think you will pay any costs for the installation, but anyway be sure to check that!

Ups, I forgot this!

If you already have a Swisscom contract in your apartment (which is what I had) be sure to get the timing right, because when you want to cancel the contract they ask you for 3 more months to pay, or if you want to do it right away you are charged of an additional fee.

I have no contract at all at the moment, so I'm free to chose (not always easier...).

It seems that I have 3 options now (sunrise Click&call 5000+ doesn't work in my building, which would have been 59 chf)

Swisscom phone + internet: 75chf

Swisscom phone + orange internet: 65 chf

Cablecom cable internet: 49 chf

I haven't heard anything negative on cablecom so far: you guys have 2h to prevent me from buying it ;) Strong arguments needed!

Thanks again!

Just to share my experience:

I discarded cable internet, as the cable fee of around 26 chf would have been on top, thus not cheaper.

I discarded mobile internet as I will probably have more than 166 MB download volume per day (= 5 GB per month) with remote desktop and spotify...

I discarded orange/sunrise... for bad experience of friends.

Now I have Swisscom DSL mini (worked within 6 days of ordering). I decided to start with the smaller bandwidth as an upgrade is quick, easy and for free. Skype works well, Spotify works well, any website I've tried as well. Youtube is no problem neither, loads quicker than it's playing...

So my resume: Internet connections are equivalent to most other products. We buy more because we can. And because someone said it's "standard" .... I'm happy with my mini DSL!

yes, i cancelled my cablecom as their after sales service really sucks.....like i mean they have none!

with the dsl from swisscom + swisscom mobile i don't pay the 25.25 sfr and have just the internet service.  cost is 49.- par month. i use skype for unlimited swiss land line calls from home, ( 7sfr. per month) and skype mobile over my i phone when in a wi fi area.

if you have need of any more info, just skype me :-)
