Free-Hugs to Euro08 supporters in GVA?
Vincent Mani from alternative.ch shared this idea with us, and we wanted to see what glocals think of it:

Organising a big Free-Hugs day, in GVA's train station, on the day when most Euro08 fansd will arrive in GVA to see the games. Sort of 'welcoming all these people to GVA with free hugs'.

What think - will it work? If it happens, will you join?

Thanks,

Nir

of course it'll work / happen... just say when the date is and as long as it's not during 'school hours' ;)

so when does this fiasco start?

Hi you all,

You indeed may have some difficulties to find other ppl to give free hugs. Swiss are usually a little bid uptight.

The other thing to consider is, giving you are talking about a horde of beer drinking fans, they would rather prefer to get a few free beer jugs instead of hugs :D.

Well, best of luck in any case.

Thanks Andrej.

I think 'free beer jugs' would indeed be hit, even more than 'free love hugs'...(-:

Not to mention us huggers having to give hugs not only to the friendly supporters, but also to some who are drunk and sweaty...maybe the free hugs to supporters needs re-thinking...(-:

Jokes aside, I'm still keen to see the reactions. Any more huggers out there?

i'd have to agree with Andrej on this one. i've been to many a game before and i don't think that me going around hugging everyone would go down a storm, might end up very bad for me! also the other thing to consider is the most likely enormous police presence that will be there also waiting for the fans, but to control any disturbances.. i'm guessing they might not be in the spirit of giving out free hugs at this tentative stage?

wait... was this a trick question?  perhaps i didn't read between the fine lines here:ermm:

so let me get this straight Nir, ... where exactly did you have in mind to do this free hug? from the sounds to these folks above, it's doesn't sound like we'd be standing in front of the Cite de Temps tourist bureau greeting the various nationals in town:unsure:

No no, no tricks here.

The locations I had in mind (althogh everything is open) were either in the city center, or at the Train station (to hug folks when they first arrive to Geneva).

I didn't imagine doing the hugs during the games or close to the game venue.

Slowly but steadily I am beginning to worry for your personal safety. As you may have read between the lines I don't think it it a brilliant idea to do such a thing. Remember that you will deal with a large group of ppl with a well developped herd instinct probably riotting in a stampede as soon as liberated and let in town. There are already now reports of useless incidents where ppl have been aggressed for no other reason but their football t-shirt. In Geneva. Be wary!

I think you guys are showing a lack of imagination here. I reckon you should dress up in Greek and Spanish national costume, and head for the train station at about 5.00pm on Saturday 7th June for your free hugs session. I'm sure you'll then get the most positive of receptions....... It's a real shame for you huggers that no UK teams are participating. I know from experience what a friendly and convivial crowd their supporters are.......

Ok Ok, fair warnings.

I wasn't physically scared for my safety tho, knowing without doubt that in case a drunken herd attacks me, Youme would jump in to help me (while giving a few hugs).

Anyway, we all - deep down - just want a hug...Even this guy:

Woops, sorry Trev, didn't mean to put salt on those open English wounds.

It was just that when I did a Google Images search for 'drunk football fans', the first 30 result pages were all of English fans! :) (I expect a good come back from you on this one!)

But here's a new pic of a potential fan that Youme will hug this weekend, this time keepoing in mind that it can't be an English team fan:

Nir I don't know why you have the impression that once the international football competitions start we all don our football kit and drink more beer.

Indeed! Thank god England didn't qualify! Mind you their mug shots and belly shots / tattoos are catalogued to be instantly recognisable by CCTV nowadays, even before they leave their own backyard!

I don't know, ask Trevor. The guy in the pic is Trev's best mate (atleast that's what says here) so Trev would know.
