You want a funny story? Here is one: Worst Date Ever - A True Date story (but fortunately not mine)

She said it was midwinter ... snowing and quite cold... and the guy had taken her skiing.  It was a day trip, no overnight, they were strangers after all, and truly had never met before.  The outing was fun but relatively uneventful until they were headed home late that afternoon.

They were driving back down the mountain, when she gradually began to realize that she should not have had that extra latte.  They were about an hour away from anywhere with a rest room and in the middle of nowhere! Her companion suggested she try to hold it, which she did for a while.  Unfortunately, because of the heavy snow and slow going, there came a point where she told him that he had better stop and let her pee beside the road or it would be the front seat of his car.

They stopped and she quickly crawled out beside the car, yanked her pants down and started. Unfortunately, in the deep snow she didn't have good footing, so she let her butt rest against the rear fender to steady herself. Her companion stood on the side of the car watching for traffic and indeed was a real gentleman and refrained from peeking.

All she could think about was the relief she felt despite the rather embarrassing nature of the situation.  Upon finishing however, she soon became aware of another sensation. As she bent to pull up her pants, the young lady discovered her buttocks were firmly glued against the car's fender.  Thoughts of tongues frozen to pump handles immediately came to mind as she attempted to disengage her flesh from the icy metal.  It was quickly apparent that she had a brand new problem due to the extreme cold. Horrified by her plight and yet aware of the humor she answered her date's concerns about "What is taking so long?" with a reply that indeed, she was "freezing her butt off and in need of some assistance!"

He came around the car as she tried to cover herself with her sweater and then, as she looked imploringly into his eyes, he burst out laughing.  She too, got the giggles and when they finally managed to compose themselves, they assessed her dilemma.  Obviously, as hysterical as the situation was, they also were faced with a real problem. Both agreed it would take something hot to free her chilly cheeks from the grip of the icy metal!

Thinking about what had gotten her into the predicament in the first place, both quickly realized that there was only one way to get her free. So, as she looked the other way, her first-time date proceeded to unzip his pants and pee her butt off the fender.

This gives a whole new meaning to being, "pissed off."

Btw, the guy became her husband.

OK Let me try. First, my cousin was named after Julie Andrews, so if that doesn't make me a shoe-in for a pair of tickets, I don't know what will. However if that's not enough, I have more...

I will say that I watched the Sound of Music on TV year after year when growing up, because, of course my cousin was named after Julie Andrews, for who knows what reason. I was a few years old I couldn't understand. I didn't think the Sound of Music was particularly special except for the fact there were some cool songs (I sang "My Favorite Things" in music competitions when I was in elementary school) and that in the end, the family was able to escape the Nazis.

However, I think it was the 13th or 14th time I saw it that I was like... wow... this is AWESOME! It really has it all, love stories, action, suspense, the beautiful and talented Julie Andrews....

Anyway, I saw this poster and I was like, I know I have seen it, what, 17 times now... but maybe I should go check it out.... I know this version probably won't have Julie Andrews, but still, it's a great story!

Anyway that's my slightly interesting, barely funny story.

OK, OK, I need to do better, so here is a poem I wrote:

Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens
Bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens
Tickets from gLocals tied up with strings
These are a few of my favorite things

Thanks Pnaik - Great stuff.

I'd say that with the current level of competition, you're chances are pretty good :-)

Hi, Oded,

Musicals are an important part of my life. Without knowing it, the songs I found among the most catchiest, the most entertaining, the most well-written and the most well-composed came from musical. My firt approach to them was often through swing and the big band era recordings. But already the figure of elegance of Fred Astaire was very attractive for me.

One of my biggest revelation was the first musical I have seen on TV. That was... guess what... The sound of music in its French version (La mélodie du bonheur). I was totally moved. For the first time, I knew where theses marvelous songs came from! I ran many flea markets to try to find the original soundrack. I fell on a corny intrument version of the music of the work... I was so sad that I could not find the real thing! I finally found the orginal Broadway version, then later on the movie soundtrack. But the LP was so worn out that I could hear more the scratches than the sound and the booklet was missing... Luckily enough, I also could find a sample in a better condition. That begun a very passionate collection of original releases of soundtracks and of VHS then DVD collectors editions reissues, and of some of the best revivals.  And, as dancers, Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly had a special place in my heart... As well as gorgeous women singers and dancers!

Later on, I have been a radio animator for some 6-7 years. During that time, I had two different shows, in two different stations, on musicals... Already a rare theme, it was even more unusual in a show in French! Some people told me that there were some persons from the national radio that listened to my programm. I know at least one animator who made an indirect comment about it... Pretending that I had copied an element of her show... while it was impossible, since it was prerecorded before hers!

During that show, I talked about the lyricists, the composers, about the singers and the muTsicians, about the shows. I commented movies, CDs, DVDs. I had interviews with artists. I also made the history of the genre, and described the musical, dancing and musical intruments origins of what was used in the musicals. I also made musical comments about the news using exerpts from musicals. I made researches to get the grip on original LP recordings (even 78 RPMS) that were not yet put on CD, or that had more first-hand infos about the premieres, and in general about the work than the CD release. I have played many versions of the same songs that came from musicals, and that often became jazz standards afterwards, from the most historical accurate (said CD releases of XIXth century wax records) to the best or the worst ones). Among the most corny version I could find, there was a French Canadian version of the Sound of music, a disco version of Singing on the rain, a military band playing exerpts of Oklahoma, and the ashtonishing versions made by a singing--saw musician! I made paralells between the music, the fashion, the artists, the movies, the dances, the history, sometimes even the commercials of an era and, of course, musicals. For an hour show, I could spend some 10 hours of preparation... But it was so fun! I miss that a lot!

I have seen quite a few shows in my life, but not yet The sound of music... It would be a dream come true to see that show!

Sorry for that very very long text... I just couldn't stop writing about that passion of mine!

I also put here a link to a 40th anniversary video with Julie Andrews and children...

Some of my text has dissapeared... It was too long, I guess...

I was writing that I have seen many musical shows in my life, but not yet "The Sound of music". That would be a real treat for me to see the forecoming revival...

I enclose a 40th anniversary videoclip, with Julie Andrews and children...

I am a BIG fan of the Sound of Music. This is the movie of my life. When we were kids, my brother and I used to watch it over and over again so at some point in time it was obvious that, living in Europe, I'd make my way up to Salzburg, to visit the locations of the movie!!!

So I did it last year! But first, I had to introduce my boyfriend to the beauty of the movie!!! (now you're thinking: poor guy, I know). And he not only saw the movie, but actually made my dream come true by booking us a night the house where the Van Trapp family -the real one- used to live!!!

We spent just over 14hs in Salzburg, but we managed to take the "Sound of Music" tour. It was 4 girls, the guide (also a woman) and my boyfriend. And guess what? Whenever the guide asked questions related to the movie, guess who would answer them promptly? Mr. Super Right!!!!!

As you can see, not only our trip was pure magic, but also proved to me that he was the best companion ever! :)

Can you give me the tickets, pls? Pls? :)

My boyfriend will go with me!

I am adding our pic in front of the Pavillion -fans will recognize it!

There are some movies that forever get etched into your being, they somehow end up shaping you by influencing you. I had two movies like that... The Sound of Music and You've Got Mail. I've seen The Sound of Music more times than I can remember. Ever since I first saw that movie as a kid, I've been hooked to it. Loved everything about it, the songs, the dances (specifically the Austrian Folk dance, the Laender), the dresses, the scenery, Captain Von Trapp and Maria. In fact my love for wedding gowns stemmed from watching Maria on her wedding day with that long flowing trail... made a vow to wear one on my wedding too. I was even fascinated with Liesl (Charmian Carr) the eldest daughter in her pink ruffled dress singing I am 16, she looked so beautiful and grown up... I remember thinking 16 is so far away and wanting to grow up soon to be 16 like her. Even now when life tends to get a little bit rough, just singing 'I have confidence in me' or 'These are a few of my Favorite things' or just about any song in the movie will somehow make things better.  That movie still holds me captive, no other movie compares to it.

I copied the above paragraph from my sister's blog, she has been crazy bout this movie ever since I can remember. She is 28 years old now and I know she will be thrilled if I could surprise her with the tickets. I can almost imagine the look on her face... :o)

Although I dont speak French, I do believe music can make my life here different.

Although We all come from different nations, I do believe there is no border for music.

Hope you like this performance. Chinese boy singing, Whitney Houston's "I Will Always Love You"

I should win those tickets because I wrote a special Poem for it, starting with the first letters of the play's name.

There once was a boy,
His name was Nir,
Every play he found very dear.

Some plays he liked,
Other plays he liked even more,
Undoubtedly he got plays at every store.
Nir was hooked on plays of all sorts,
Dont matter even if the heros had warts.

Oded siteadmin did a competition one day,
For free tickets to Nir's favourite play.

Many people tried to get the tickets,
Using all sorts of high tech attractions like YouTube videos.
Sadly for them,
It's clear that a good old poem is better then video.
C you all the play!

Howdy Folks

Our friends at the Geneva Amateur Operatic Society (GAOS)  are mounting a production of ‘The Sound of Music’ in Geneva and we have 14 free tickets to give away.

The tickets are for opening night (Friday, April 23 @ 20h) at the Theatre du Leman and we think its going to be a great show.

How to win free tickets:

Just post a funny / interesting story, photo or video explaining why you should get the tickets.

On Wednesday, April 21, we’ll pick the 7 winning posts, and give winning poster 2 free tickets.

Easy right?  Then let the games begin…

Apr 15, 10 11:57

I need those tickets to find out whether I can be mature enough to listen the Mother Superior say "What is it you can't face, Maria" without giggling and thinking she says "What is it you c**t face,Maria" ; which is what it sounds like in the movie. The movie will never be the same once you discovered this little gem.

The text you are quoting:

I need those tickets to find out whether I can be mature enough to listen the Mother Superior say "What is it you can't face, Maria" without giggling and thinking she says "What is it you c**t face,Maria" ; which is what it sounds like in the movie. The movie will never be the same once you discovered this little gem.

Hi, I would love to win those tickets as recently there has been little funny stuff in my life in Switzerland and I could do with some night out to enjoy ...ok ok I am not going to play the misarable one here :-)

Here it is ...I come from the coldest part of Poland and every weekend in winter like a ritual me and my father used to go to "bania" a kind of a sauna next to a river...which is normally frozen in winter by -20 degrees. So... after 15 min of sweating in the 70 degrees bania you are supposed to dive right into the river ( or rather a small whole made in the ice) and then repeat  the procedure at least 3 times...But hey look at our eastern neighbours they forgott to drill the hole in the ice... Love the movie

Hope it will make you laugh, too

Well I believe that my boyfriend and myself are possibly the only people in the world that have never seen this movie before. We would both love tickets to go and see it, since we are celebrating our first anniversary together. Nir please save my boyfriend since if we dont win tickets, it will be me singing to him all night, and I'm brutal!!!

I took this photo in Italy when I came back from Africa.

I want to hold my dreams like this photo, but few people can chase dream successfully, just as being a winner and getting free tickets from here.

Post 24

OK, here's why I would like the tickets, please.

When I was in my late teens, I danced with a ballet company and we put on a season of The Sound of Music where I played Maria. Naturally I had numerous costume changes and there is one scene where she leaves the family and goes back to the convent (after the Baroness makes her realise she was in love with the Captain) so of course I had to change back into my postulant outfit which was like a shorter nun's habit just as in the movie. Anyway I had this big solo scene where I was in the chapel trying to get my head around becoming a nun and being in love but what I didn't realise (and what nobody told me before I went back on stage) is that the back of my dress was caught in the waistband of my stockings and the "trainee nun" was showing off a hot pink thong to the entire audience for the entire two minutes until mother superior walked onto the stage and sorted me out. At this point I turned the same colour as my underwear.

Anyway, despite that, big fan. Wanted to do the Sound of Music Tour when I was last in Austria but didn't have enough time to do it properly and my stalking of Julie Andrews paid off this winter when I saw her in the local Coop in Gstaad. It took all my willpower to not go up to her and sing "How do you solve a problem like Maria?"

Hope that is humiliating/funny enough to warrant tickets.

Post 25

Me and my fiancée met during a Sound of Music show in Hofors, a small Swedish town in the middle of nowhere.

I was von Trapp's butler Franz and made a complete fool out of myself when attempting to play the clarinett on stage along with the lead actress singing "My favorite things". Normally, Franz is a very small role (and it should have stayed that way). However, in a moment of weekness and profound stupidity I had told the director that I cold play the clarinett quite well (which I couldn't). He took my stupid word for it and made me play along this song on stage. I thought I could pull it off but started screwing up already on the opening note. I got even more nervous and my playing worsened accordingly to the point were the whole audience started laughing. I think the lead actress must have done some horribly funny faces.

Once the play finished I promised myself never to play the clarintt ever again, but 10 min into the "back-stage party" a gorgeus girl walked up to me and started laughing. It turned out she played the clarinett really well and she offered me lessons. I accepted... Now we play clarinett duetts together and we're getting married in August!!

We'd love to go to Sound of Music together on Friday. It brings up so many wonderful memories so please consider us for the tickets!

No funny or interesting stories, no photos or videos, no reason at all why I should win a ticket except that I was too slow off the mark to buy one.

Do hope winners will enjoy the show.  Best, Ritchie

PS:  Have just remembered that I actually heard Julie Andrews's first-ever radio broadcast on the BBC.  Does that count?

My family name is "Hill".  My pet hampsters, Hammy Hill and Spammy Hill,  recently passed away. I had heard of this great musician who could bring them back to life singing one of the classics " . . . .  the Hill's are alive, with the Sound of Music . . ..  ".

Well im a huge Sound of music fan. I loved that movie from day one. Even now its the best pick me up experience. There is nothing better to cheer me up when im feeling down than a nice hot cup of tea and the Sound of Music on the laptop (due to the lack of a better viewing media!)

Unfortunately, all other members of the household are Sound of Music fans so everytime i try to watch it, i end up watching something like this:

See how a male and female brain work.

See that HUH?

I know it.

My destiny lies in front of me.

For after many years of travelling around the world, after many battles with death, after crossing back and forth the limits of sanity and good taste, I have finally reached the source of all meaning within my life. All the pieces of the puzzle have been properly aligned, and by answering one last question, I shall be able to understand why I have come into existance.

As I take a look at the big picture, the aforementioned question comes into view:

<< Is the Sound of Music more properly translated into Spanish as "Sonrisas y Lagrimas" (Smiles and Teardrops), as they do it in Spain, or as "La Novicia Rebelde" (The Rebel Novice), as they do it in Latin America? >>

(Sigh)

I was hoping the question to be similar to those you find in "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?", and not something so deep and philosophical.

But alas! I have no idea how to answer, as I have not seen the original version! Please, aid me on my quest, and my thanks will be... um... very thankful.

I would be thrilled to win these tickets. First of all my name is Julie. I was actually named after Julie Andrews because my mom was such a fan. In addition to knowing every word to every song, I own the DVD. So, far I guess that doesn't qualify me to win, but here's the clencher:

I have a four-year-old son and I've been singing the Sound of Music to him since he was born. When I finally bought the DVD last year, I asked my son to watch it with me on Christmas Day (my husband is from Latin America and doesn't get the movie at all!). I didn't expect a four-year-old boy to sit long enough to watch the Sound of Music, but he gave me the best Christmas present ever--not only did he watch the whole movie, but he enjoyed it and hummed along to all the tunes. A momma couldn't be prouder. I'd love to take him to see the play.

My last post is funny enough to make everybody laugh but I guess that is not relevant enough huh? well I have a very big inspiration about MUSIC from my class today, really wish to share with you guys all. It's about a movie called SHINE.

David Helfgott, is a very talented concert pianist from Australia. However, he suffered from schiyoaffective disorder at an early stage. He strived hard through his life, spent time in psychiatric hospital, and with faith and support from his wife Gillian, he recovered, and made a new chapter of his life.

This is the movie but how's the real story?

He made a world tour. Finally he made it. He received a great applause from the public audiences. Yet most critics pointed that the concert was a nightmare, claiming that it was distasteful, and felt sad that he didn't know how bad a musician he was.

The professionals do not agree with his passion in music.

But I do. He went off a bit over the keyboard, but he is far beyond the ordinary's imagination. He had a strong, intense relationship with the music he is playing, and I believe this is how he touched the masses heart.

This is my belief in music too. PASSION.

Let's always have the passion and faith in the SOUND OF MUSIC.

Ok folks - the competition is now closed - thanks for the great posts.

I wish we had more tickets to give away, but we only have 14 so we had to choose 7 winners, and they are:

Gracie, Tiberg, Kate Rochet, Nir, Poster, Helen Sarah and Genevorin

I'm sending each of the winners a private message with the details of how to pick up your tickets.

Thanks again to everyone who participated and to our friends at GAOS.

Oded

Below are the winning posts:

Gracie
am a BIG fan of the Sound of Music.

Tiberg

Kate Rochet

Nir
I should win those tickets because I wrote a special Poem for it, starting with the first letters of the play's name.
There once was a boy,
His name was Nir,
Every play he found very dear.
Some plays he liked,
Other plays he liked even more,
Undoubtedly he got plays at every store.
Nir was hooked on plays of all sorts,
Dont matter even if the heros had warts.
Oded siteadmin did a competition one day,
For free tickets to Nir's favourite play.
Many people tried to get the tickets,
Using all sorts of high tech attractions like YouTube videos.
Sadly for them,
It's clear that a good old poem is better then video.
C you all the play!

Ok, so i really really really need cheering up!
I moved to Geneva just over a month ago, and had had plane and train tickets (costing over £250) to take me back home to York in ENgland to see my best friend get married, and also to see my lovely boyfriend who is still living back in the UK.
Only a few hours before i supposed to fly out for the best weekend, the highlight of the year, to see my beautiful friend in her gorgeous dress, tie the knott in front of friends and family i get told about a random valcanoe erupting in Iceland meaning that i am unable to see my loved ones :(
This has made me incredibly homesick and as silly as it sounds seeing the sound of music would bring a little bit of home to Geneva for me :s
As embarrassing as this is to admit i Auditioned for Andrew Lloyd Webbers "how to solve a problem like maria" a few years back (and got pretty far in the competition).
It is a favorite memory of mine from my teenage years (ok i'm only 22) and it would be great to relive part of this and have a little taste of home at a time when i am feeling very home sick and very sorry for myself...
Pick me and i will smile for you :) xx

Genevorine

The text you are quoting:

Ok folks - the competition is now closed - thanks for the great posts.

I wish we had more tickets to give away, but we only have 14 so we had to choose 7 winners, and they are:

Gracie, Tiberg, Kate Rochet, Nir, Poster, Helen Sarah and Genevorin

I'm sending each of the winners a private message with the details of how to pick up your tickets.

Thanks again to everyone who participated and to our friends at GAOS.

Oded

Below are the winning posts:

Gracie
am a BIG fan of the Sound of Music.

Guys, so is it really true that

floydmarks

is not a winner with his custom-made-youtube-video?!

That sucks.That really sucks.

Now I can see why some of winning posts are really low quality - begging for tickets was not enough before )) remember winning posts for the Police or Blue Men Band?

Oh well, neither photo (Maria) nor video (floydmarks) worked this time ))

So I guess next time people wouldn't invest time in actually being creative ))

floydmark's post was in top 5 (at least!) of the posts here at glocals for tickets, and it wasn't enough... Oh well, it's not my business, but if you get spare tickets left for any reason, give them to him - he is the one who actually deserved them ))

Dear All (especially Glocals admin)

There have been many posts supporting Maria and even though I posted one myself, I laughed and felt Maria's post was cool. And I was also not particulalry impressed with the posts that won.

So I have a suggestion -- in future let the Glocals members do the judging - not the admin. And can we make a rule that Nir and other admin do not participate in this. If my boss entered a competition, there is no way I could ever let him loose. Even if there would be no consequences if I did, I would feel I owed him/her -- he/she gave me a job!!!! ha ha ha!!!!

I agree with Shilumani on that matter that members of the glocals administration (or their immediate family or relatives, more precisely, their husband, wife, girlfriend, boyfriend, children) should not participate in these contests to get prizes. It's the basic rule that we find in almost all companies or organizations presenting such an activity. If among all the tickets, one pair should be given to the administration, well let it be given directly without telling. Instead of have 7 pairs of tickets available for a contest, mention only six! Wink

I also would highly suggest to be more precise about the rules. Any clear rule can be OK, if it is clearly told at the very begining. For example : don't post out-of-blue videos with one line comment, give reasons related to the show, and no general ones that could be cut-and-pasted for any contests... Or else, be very "open minded" (as we can read in many profiles Smile) and say openly that contestants can write anyhow about anything, to get the tickets. Also, judges in a contest can prefer funny stories or romantic ones (it's their right), but then present it that way, For example, knowing that, I would have explained otherwise why I would have liked to get the tickets, instead of telling how I got my passion for musicals, how I became a specialist and how "The Sound of Music" played a role in all that great passion of mine. I think that my post, although too long (making it maybe soporific by moments!!!), a little messy at the end (I admit it), had some interest, since I was thanked three times for it. I don't write that because I am a bad looser. There were definitively more funny, more tongue-in-the-cheek, more romantic stories than mine. And intellectual thrills are always less catchy... I know! Tongue out

As a matter of fact, I would have easily prefered to see my text put aside if Maria's post, Pnaik's, Floydmars's (even if the latest is not my favorite one, although it has something special) or other "competitors'" posts with imagination (on that I agree with Extremal) and more related to the show had won. As others here, for let's say a few cases (I won't tell which ones), I don't have the feeling that the most significativily funny and interesting texts or images have been selected.

Hi folks and thanks for the feedback.

Re picking the winners - for this competition, the judges were GAOS, not me.  I love the idea of members being the judges and we'll try it next time.

Re glocals staff and family not participating in future competitions - Nir submited his poem for fun and when his post was selected by the judges I almost vetoed their decision but decided to let it ride.  I really thought people would be happy to see Nir win, but I was wrong and in the future Nir & I will not participate in competitions.

my 2 cents to the glocals.com members:

From what I know (and I know some things) such competitions are 100% fair, so no worries on this one. There was no preference in other competitions so far to friends etc (Nir knows I will kick his ass if he doesn't take me with him to the show - he has TWO tickets!). The fact the GAOS were judging the competition explained the choices made.

p.s. Nir's post would have won regardless of Nir being a godfather of glocals.com community :)

p.p.s. Nir, now you don't have a choice, right? So what time do we go to the show tomorrow? :P

If you go as my date, then I'll treat you like a date include buying you dinner and telling you how much I love being with you. But then you have to deliver what I'd expect my date to deliver!

You still want to go ahead with the deal?

@ Maria-that cat is so cute, I will trade you my full screen for a little time with him, or her, or any cat for that matter!

As for the people who dont think its fair the way these are judged, dont participate! Nir and the site admin didnt even need to have this contest, they could have just giving out the tickets to friends and family in the first place if that is what they really wanted. Instead they made a competition, that is suppose to be fun, apparently some people cant handle losing. I would have loved to go as well, however I didnt win, who cares life is not over and maybe those people who did win, good story/poem or not, deserved it. Not to mention I believe everything happens for a reason...what if there was a huge fire and everyone died...would i ever be happy i "lost" this competition!
