French license plates

Can anybody confirm that in France the license plates have to be riveted permanently to the car! I thought I have heard or read about this...but yesterday I went to Feu Vert and the guys just clipped my new French plates in the plastic frames that were used for my German plates before. I am a bit worried now that the guys a Feu Vert were just to lazy to do it properly and I am driving around with illegally installed plates now?!.

Thanks in advance!

Marcel

Marcel, they need to be fixed:

Voici un extrait de l'article R317-8 du code de la route :

"I. Tout véhicule à moteur, ... doit être muni de deux plaques d'immatriculation, portant le numéro assigné au véhicule et fixées en évidence d'une manière inamovible à l'avant et à l'arrière du véhicule."

There seems to be some discussion as to whether  riveting is the only legal method for permanent fixing. (E.g. glue etc.)  However, IMHO, you'd be inviting problems if they are not reveted.

PS. You can read the rest of the fun at
