French part of CH, heads up...

I need some suggestions for very specific things to do (ie: names of restaurants not just "there's a great place somewhere in Lausanne") in the French part of Switzerland with some guests. They're visiting from the States the week of the 11-17th. One of the ladies is a Francophile who likes wine, a lot.

They're in Liechtenstein on the 14th and we're in Luzern on the 12th. Other than that, we're free as birds.

Now, hit me with your best ideas! svp...;)

Thanks y'all,

LA

Hey ;-P

Americans who spend a whole week in Switzerland ?! And who know it's a country on it's own !?? Food wise, they know raw meat is eatable ? And actally delicious, prepared the right way ? They know about "raw milk" cheeses ???

DAMN ! I'm impressed !

You gotta take care of them, they're are breed ;-P

Seriuosly, I'm teasing.... I've been living in the US for a year and a half, I loved it :-))

Well, I'm in Lausanne, and first advice: steer clear of Ouchy !!!

You can go visit, walk, but do not go to any place in Ouchy, with view at the lake, having something to eat. It's horrible, horrible tourist traps, overpriced and quality like McDonalds, at best. Worst place there: Moevenpick hotel (I have been working there for 3 years ....)

2 places I can recommend:

"Café de l'Evechée"

http://travel.yahoo.com/p-travelguide-2895418-cafe_de_l_eveche_lausanne-i

prices are very reasonable, place is very basic, very down-to-earth, simple, food is very good. Of all meals they serve each day, it's 80% Fondue, the entire place stinks horribly of cheese, and if your Americans are not prepared to the thought of eating 15 oz of melted cheese per person and have half a bottle of wine as apéro per person - wrong place !  The  place is excellent in price / quality ratio !!

No Michelin--Star food, but that's not what you are looking for, right ?

Second place I can recommend in Lausanne:

Café de l'Avenir

http://www.lavenir.ch/

Same thing: very down to earth, excellent price / quality ratio.

Home-made pasta !

Small place, call to reserve ! But that applies also to Café de l"Eveché, btw...

Have a few more recommendations, if you need, those 2 are best.

Contact me if you need more ;-p

Enjoy !!!

Take them up to Gruyère.  Or across the border to Annecy.

I can't help with the wines.  Romandie is defintiely not a wine lover's paradise.

Uh, but I beg to differ !!!

It's not wines that compare to French Premier Grand Cru's or other first-class Italian or Spanish or Chilenean Wines, that much I agree.

But you find hundreds of vineyards all along the shores of Lake Geneva.

And many, many make some rather decent wines.

You shouldn't dismiss Switzerland as a wine country because of its size or not exactely top notch quality.

Visiting a vineyard can always be a pleasant undertaking for the day; just google "visite cave vin Epesses (ou Romandie, or whatever village you pic on google-maps, between Lausanne and Montreux; they all make wine).

One example:

If you have tourists visiting - and thus being interested in- the country, you should have them taste local wines.

Switzerland makes quite a lot of it ...

Montreux is quite pretty for a walk.

Look for some wine tasting in vinyards around Lausanne, but as Rich says, its not going to be a vintners delight...and you'll definitely need a car.

Take a boat across to Evian, if the weather is good thats quite nice.
