You know the way that dog owners start to look like their pets, or is it the other way round? I can never remember, but judging by the Zutons, Liverpool's Old English Sheepdog numbers must have reached levels not known since Paul McCartney serenaded Martha, my dear, in their mid-60s heyday.
With an eclectic take on that well worn scouse-rock formula of slightly manic over enthusiasm combined with infectious hooks, the Zutons stomped into town and declared they were "made up" that there were more Swiss in the audience than English. Singer Dave McCabe could charm the birds from the trees. "Everyone told us Swiss crowds were shit, but yous are boss" he cooed, "Are y's all having a good time? Well I am, so I don't give a fig" (or words to that effect that I wont repeat in polite company).
Having been in exile from the mystical banks of the Mersey for some 6 years or more now, I haven't seen the Zutons live before and I was pleasantly surprised. On vinyl they can come across as a little contrived, but on the stage their in yer face approach and lack of pretensions give the songs a new sense of urgency.
On the subject of the on-going GoL debate about "No Shows" the last word should go to the Zutons:
"You will, you wont
You do, you don't
You say you will, but you know you wont
You may, you might
Your chest gets tight
You say you love day, but you come out at night ..."
And lo, we did come out. And we were glad. And I don't give a f-f-fig either ... next time someone else can drive cos I'm 'avin a bevy. Anyone for Dulux?

honestly, one of the hottest bands in the UK right now [their London gig sold out in an hour apparently..] and we saw them with just 100 or so of our closest friends. [ok, fribourg students actually .. ] for what, 25 CHF ??
daylight robbery and i almost felt sorry for them having such a small audience. Still they were tight .. tighter than a crab's a*se at 50 fathoms [why is it only the english that get that one ?? ;-) ] and we had as much fun as they did.
An opportunity missed, for those that didnt make it ..
