Gatherings of a 1000 or more people have been cancelled over Switzerland

Dear All.

The Federal Government says in a press release the decision to ban all gatherings of 1,000 people or more was made this morning (28 February 2020) at a special meeting. It also urges private organizers of events of less than a thousand to take extra precautions.
It says the government’s main priority is to protect the population.

Please stay safe everyone and have a good weekend!

I read that the #1 thing that most people can do to reduce the risk of getting any virus is wash hands often.

And then i learned there's an art to washing the hands correctly:

If sayings such as “It’s an ill wind that blows nobody any good” and “every cloud has a silver lining” are true, then maybe the coronavirus scare will curtail the Swiss obsession with hand shaking whatever the occasion and often both inappropriate and intrusive.

It’s a  custom I would be very happy to live without.

That's so true. I've seen people (incl me) washing hands often, but then going right to touching the dirty phone screen.

What you are missing is that we are not talking about "anti-bacterial" stuff.

All viruses consist of nucleic acid, either DNA or RNA, encased by a protein coat. Coronaviruses also have a lipidbilayer. Soap disrupts the lipid bilayer. An alcohol-based hand desinfectant (70%) breaks down the lipid blayer and disrupts the protein coat. Both are also effective in disrupting bacteria, which are unicellular organisms whose membrane is a lipid bilayer with encrusted proteins.

Swiss gave figures of fatalities running at 3.3%

I have to admit that I do not accept this figure.  If you look at today's figures there have been 6'525 deaths and 77'778 recovered

I have to admit that I do not accept this figure.  If you look at today's figures there have been 6'525 deaths and 77'778 recovered

https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/#countries

According to my calculations that is 8.4%

In overall global figures this is not high but the pyramid type of growth from contamination is astronomical. However looking at the progress in China the number of new cases, the rate has slowed down tremendously and and it would appear that the policy of quarantine is working

Wahing hands is a must.  If you are in good health normally, you must be able to hold your breath for 10 seconds without coughing.  If you cannot this could mean that the virus is already affecting your lungs.  I travelled by train yesterday (try getting out of the WC, having washed you handsjust using your elbows), and noted that some people are being especially careful. Covering their figure before pressing the open door button.  Disposable plastic gloves are a good idea when moving about in places where you might touch hand rails (getting on and off buses for instance, picking up baskets in supermarkets) - in such cases you can take them off and out them on again so long as you do not turn them inside out.

There are plenty of government sites with advice on htem. The above is just an example of what I personally am doing and is not related to any medical knowledge.

I and all other mountain leaders in Geneve Rando and the Swiss Alpine Club have cancelled all organised excursions until further noptice (and this even includes outings in Geneva canton).  Personally I think this is going a little too far but we have a responsibility with regard to safety of our members.

Geneva declares the state of necessity. ORCA activated (they can call the military in as needed, but will not do it for the moment).

No manifestations of more than 5 people.

All the shops a part from the essential ones closed from today at 18h00.

Only food shops, chemists, corner shops, newsagents and petrol stations will remain open. All non essential public places will be shut.

Restaurants allowed to do take away.

Confederation will have a press conference today at 15:00.

@Paul E:

This is complete bullshit. Please do not spread misinformation.

Also, we all have Internet and it's not like Glocals is the only remaining working website in the world, so I don't see the point of posting stuff here which can be a mix of truth and hoaxes.

Because of this reason I won't be posting anything else about the coronavirus outbreak. But before, I just want to advise you to keep yourself informed on authoritative sources only, for instance:

They said tonight on the news that the blood reserves at the HUG are running low.

If you can give blood, please do so.

The number is [022 372 39 01]

Thank you!
